March of the Penguins

folkyboyTim and I saw March of the Penguins this afternoon, and it was amazing. I had no idea that the life of a penguin was so complex! I mean, sure, I knew it was cold and frozen and all of that, but I have to say the whole experience was really inspiring.

I couldn't help but think about our lives as people in the 21st century, how cluttered it is with machines and gadgets and gizmos and schedules and all of those other things that "savage" beasts don't add into their already chaotic lives. It's funny how all of these things purport to simplify our existence and yet more complexities are added to us. Not to mention how our choices have affected our planet.

The whole experience was simply breathtaking and it just reaffirmed my desire to get into my own space so I can simplify my life and my family's life. I want to clear my space, clean my air, grow some food, give back to the earth... tread more lightly. I don't feel like that is terribly possible here, not right now anyway, so I'm anxious to get to that next step. Perhaps I should watch more nature films.

In other news, going out in the heat (to the movies and then Tim and I walked up Newbury street and hit some used record stores) really wore me out. I was seriously dragging my butt up the stairs. Yar, I'm old. But we got to stop at the Pru and have lunch with my smoochie (Qdoba, mmm), so that was a huge plus!

In other OTHER news, the employee at the Body Shop was totally flirting with me when I was buying shower gel. And I'm starting to get eyed by boys in public. Enter Bizarro World, Population: Me.

Yes, you definitely do.

I loved it!

There was a little moment where they were kicking around their frozen egg, pathetically.

I felt sad.

That part totally killed me!

I was amazed Laurel only had to make one bathroom trip during March of the Penguins. (She expressed interest in it before we went, but it was my birthday movie pick.)

Our local Qdoba disappeared this spring, so I haven't been to one yet. How are they compared to Chipotle?

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2005-08-14 01:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course I am a huge lover of Chipotle, so I much prefer Chipotle to Qdoba. (Qdoba is my replacement burrito, since we have no Chipotles here.) But it's not bad. Very similar. And they have yummy queso.

Our closest Qdoba is about as far away as the closest Chipotle, so I will have to bring it up as an idea the next time we go out to lunch. I am a sucker for yummy queso. (:

Make sure you're REALLY hungry and do a side-by-side taste test!!

[identity profile] folkyboy.livejournal.com 2005-08-14 06:01 am (UTC)(link)

i agree, though. the movie was way good

Maybe it's because I was walking with YOU. Rowr!

W and I wanted to go see that - but here all the commentary is in Japanese. Is it worth seeing just for the visuals? Or should we wait for the DVD?

PS. Sorry I missed your call!

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2005-08-14 01:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's probably best to wait for the English commentary on DVD. Not only would it make a /lot/ more sense with the words, Morgan Freeman narrates and I find his voice so comforting and relaxing. There was a LOT of commentary. I thought it would be a few words and a lot of penguins, but there was a definite story to it.

So yeah, wait. Unless you can find a Morgan Freeman version somewhere.

[identity profile] cranapril.livejournal.com 2005-08-14 01:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Definitely wait... because it was really helpful to know how the penguins can identify mom/dad/baby and also, you won't be able to understand when mom or dad are the ones taking their long trek to the breeding grounds/ocean.

Very important to know which parent is doing what.

We took the boys and Grandma to see this last night after Johnny's birthday dinner. Paul had trouble understanding that there were girl penguins and boy penguins... and Johnny spent half the movie crying about the baby penguins that didn't make it.

All of the grownups loved it, though.

You know, the movie /was/ a lot sadder than I expected, so I'm not surprised that Johnny was really sad. Those cracked and frozen eggs really broke me up, too.

It was hard to tell the male and female penguins, too. I kept looking for differences and couldn't really find any!

Gloria and I were supposed to see that movie a few weeks ago. We both laughed when we read a warning in a review about "graphic penguin sex". Haha!

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Are you KIDDING me? That's ridiculous.

Some people are just out of their minds.

(Did you see the movie?)

[identity profile] buddhafly4224.livejournal.com 2005-08-14 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
lol. jen wants to see that movie. i didn't know it was actually serious; it just looks so silly and wobbely and cute.

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Oh no, it's quite serious. It's a nature documentary. And it's beautiful. You should go!

We saw March of the Penguins last night. Tayler cried when the baby penguin got grabbed by the predator bird.

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2005-08-16 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
Awwh, that's so sweet!

Some parts were really sad. I think the saddest was watching the egg crack and freeze.
