The Perfect Plan

Argh! I hate when I have a Perfectly Good Plan and it all just falls apart. Because, really, I'm not that great at coming up with Perfectly Good Plans, I mean, Really Flawless Plans, so when I get one it's a Big Deal. (Wow, that's a lot of caps.)

I really wanted to cook up something special for My Jennifer for Valentine's Day, even though we're not really Valentine's people, because things have been kind of crappy for a while. Originally I looked into trips we could take because JetBlue was running some cheap airfares. I'd found some awesome fares to the Bahamas and Puerto Rico and was trying to plan a getaway, but that got kind of expensive kind of quickly. (I mean, I could probably drop $500 and figure out where it would come from, but when you're talking $400 airfare [which is a STEAL for two people to the Carribbean], that doesn't leave much for the hotel and food and stuff.) So I was looking for something else, anything else, really, that doesn't involve going away THIS weekend, because as you know, I haven't visited my grandparents in 987983782318 years (2 weeks) and if I don't go this weekend, they will produce more guilt.

I looked at pretty much every theatre and music event going on in Boston this weekend and nothing really jumped out at me - lots of serious plays and while I would /love/ to see Flogging Molly on Saturday, I don't think it's Jen's bag. I considered Joey & Maria's Comedy Wedding (one of those goofy dinner-theatre things), but when I did more research I learned that not only is it interactive (not sure how Jen feels about that), but there is a GARTER TOSS, which I think is muy yuck.

But then, I found it! The Perfect Plan!

Somehow in all of my research and crap I learned that Heart (which I like okay but is really one of Jen's favorites ever) is doing a concert on March 11th at the Seneca Casino in Niagara Falls (NY side). The tickets are quite sold out, but there were scalper ones online for $95/piece (not too shabby). So then I called the Casino to inquire about room rates, but they were all sold out for the 11th. So THEN I started looking up other hotels in the Niagara Falls area, and found one (cheapy, but who cares, you just sleep there) that was 1.5 blocks away from the casino for like $70/night!

The Perfect Plan: 2 tickets @ $95 each, 2 nights hotel @ $70 each, some travel/food costs = 1 great weekend for Jen!

Now, Jen's job sucks (as everyone knows) and she works most weekends, but with enough warning she can sometimes finagle some time off. But when we were looking at the airfare to PR, I remember her saying that there was one weekend in March that she couldn't take off because 2 people were on vacation. So I called her.

AND OF COURSE IT IS THE WEEKEND OF MARCH 11TH.

Argh! Judezilla could SPIT FIRE! Of course, Jen tried to be super gracious and say that she was really touched by the thought and all of that, which was quite nice, but damn. I /really/ would have liked to surprise her tomorrow with that whole weekend all planned up and reserved, with a night in front of one of her favorite bands ever. Poop.

Oh well, it was a damned fine idea.
