Canadia

I think I'm tired of trying to change things here. I could move just a few hours away and not have to think about it.

I wonder how long and difficult it would be to emigrate to Canada.

I totally heart Montreal. The only trouble with that being the place to move to from the States is that Quebec has super-weird immigration requirements. When I went to McGill I had to apply to Quebec Immigration first and only after they accepted me could I get a Canadian student visa. I've heard from my friends that the other provinces don't have this requirement.

Oh wow... complicated.

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
Let's go!

Let's all go!

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
I guess I just wonder how long it usually takes.

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, thanks! :)

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
How did you decide where to move? I mean within Canada.

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
That would be fun!!

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
I just don't think it will ever happen.

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
I just think about what the future holds for my family here and it's not pretty. All of the crap we go through just for Jen to have legal rights to her own kid, and yet we still have to do all this weird stuff with federal taxes, and it sucks to not have your marriage recognized.

Add to that the fact that college tuition in the US is crazy NOW, what the heck is it going to be like in 18 years? I'll never be able to send my kid(s) to school. Ugh.

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
Word.

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe I will take you up on that.

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
I am not joking. I seriously wonder how long it takes and how much it costs. For real.

Good luck to your friend. :)

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
That sounds lovely. I want to have a Happily Ever After, too.

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
Is it wrong of me to be pleased that I'm a regular in your dreams?

It's like so SCI-FI! :)

(And yeah, Kerry was no prize.)

Completely by "feel."

Wanted to be in Ontario because I grew up in Michigan. We went to Toronto on a little holiday before we were approved just to see if we'd like it there. Fought the entire time. Drove back to MI and stopped in London and just fell in love with the city. It felt right.

[identity profile] tea-soaked.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
It took less than a year and a chunk of money. We were granted Landed Immigrant status and had health care right away. Abby has since become a Canadian citizen. I still hold US citizenship (so I will vote in the next election).

Oh, that's sweet. :)

I have the major mad love for Vancouver but could never afford such silliness. I visited a friend there once when I was in college - he had lived there his whole life and it was such a part of him and his mom, and they were both so awesome, and it was so pretty, and and and.

I have never been to London.

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 02:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh that's good to know! Thank you for the info. :) (I knew I loved you for a reason.) I also wonder how difficult it would be to find a job.

[identity profile] tea-soaked.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 02:43 pm (UTC)(link)
London is not beautiful like Vancouver. It is just your regular little college town. I like the college town atmosphere. It can be conservative. But conservative in Canada is not like conservative in the US. There is a bit of a queer women type community here. It's small but big too - if you know what I mean. The cost of living here is nice too. Places like Vancouver and Toronto - while way cool to live there - not so cool when it comes to house buying and whatnot.

You all are welcome to visit anytime - I think we'd have fun.

Depends on where you are and what you are trained to do.

We were both employed within a month of moving here - I was not in my field (teaching) and Abby was in her field (cheffing). Her job was perfect for her and she is still there 9 years later.

I worked in an office and made very good money while I waited for my credentials to be assessed (it took a year - a process I probably could have started before moving). Then I had to wait a bit longer to actually get a job substitute teaching. Subbing turned into short term contracts, which evetually turned into permanent teaching. I had to really put myself out there to get noticed w/regard to teaching - because it can be a field where if people know you then you are in, if you know what I mean. And I was this American from America (hahaha) who didn't really know the system or the culture and all that.

There is a lot of information out there on which jobs are needed and where... search Human Resources Development Canada.

What are your qualifications?

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 03:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you again for your awesome info.

I am a licensed clinician with a master's in social work. So I'm not sure how licensing and stuff would match up there. I suppose I need to do some sort of research into that. Here I am licensed for everything including private practice therapy (which I have never done).

That's good that you found something, even if it wasn't in your field, relatively quickly. Jen doesn't have a "field" and I'm always worried that she will have a hard time finding work. :)

[identity profile] tea-soaked.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 03:52 pm (UTC)(link)
You will do fine with those credentials.

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 03:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah, Vancouver and Toronto are like Boston and New York and San Francisco for me - I love them but I could never even think about living there and raising a family. Not unless I won the lottery. ;)

I like college towns, too. I like the transient youth and the energy and the big-town-small-town feel. We live in a college town right now (well a town over from a college town) and it's nice. And affordable. And nice. I can dig it.

I think the four of us and our two girls should just have some sort of commune thing going on. We could work out the child care and the working and the housework and the cooking and just have a chill old time with our little village raising our kids.

[identity profile] tea-soaked.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 03:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Love it!
