Almost one!

On Tuesday at 1:15pm my baby girl will be a full year old. I can't believe an entire year (almost) has gone by since a tiny, little, skinny, chicken-legged bit of a thing emerged into the world in such a dramatic fashion, almost as if she couldn't wait to experience it all. And she's still like that, even today - always has to be in the middle of it, trying to figure it all out.

Tonight she took her first bath in the big bathtub. Crazy, right, since she's almost 1 but I've been bathing her in the sink ever since we ditched the little baby bathtub. It seemed easier because it didn't involve my kneeling (ow) and well, I wanted to keep her a baby as long as possible. And she wasn't the best sitter, and still would prefer to sit on her knees and loses her balance on her bottom sometimes. But she'd gotten too big for the sink and was driving me nuts the way she always wanted to climb out of it, and I gave her a test run in the kiddie pool where she sat still enjoying the water for a while. Operation Big Tub was a complete success, right down to her pulling to stand on the side of the bathtub so I was able to rinse her more easily.

Also in the last couple of days she has started to cover her eyes when you say, "Peek-a-boo." In true Punk fashion, she does this only when she wants to, much like clapping on cue or waving when you say "hi" or "bye." But dear God that peek-a-boo business is the cutest thing ever. I am trying to teach her to blow kisses now, and sometimes it looks like she is trying to figure it out.

I have been trying to feed her with a bowl and spoon and most times she is glad to hold the spoon in one hand and grab the food with the other. Until she pulls the bowl off of the suction cup (why on earth is it removable???!?) and tries to make the Big Dump. When she holds the spoon it is yet another reminder that she is becoming a Big Girl.

She has started to be a little daring with the sounds, putting different vowel sounds together in one 'word' like "ba boo" and "dah dee." I keep hoping that 'ba boo' will turn into 'peek-a-boo' because I think that would be an awesome first word.

The best thing is how freaking mischievous she is. I really didn't know infants had this kind of capability but she is too smart and too devious for her own good. She has a bad habit of wanting to eat cat fur that she will pick off the floor or even directly from the cats. It is disgusting and she knows I don't like it and will try to take it from her, so when she gets her hands on some cat fur, she turns to look at me, smiling, and slooooooowly brings her hand to her mouth. When I get up to go after her, she shrieks and crawls as quickly as she can to the corner behind the couch where she can enjoy her contraband in secret. I freaking love it.

Maybe she thinks the whole cat fur thing is a game that you and she loves to play?

Hey, you never told me what Gus wants for her birthday. I went looking for baby stuff, but everything either had pictures of infants on it, or older kids. And stuff I think would be funny to give to a baby all had minimum ages of 13 or so. Teddy Scares have small parts and Gloomy Bear has sharp claws. sigh. what size does she wear these days?

My mom gave us baths in the kitchen sink until we REALLY couldn't fit anymore. Like possibly until we were 3.
