Umm... how is it that Sarah Palin understands autism better than most?

Is it because her infant son has Down Syndrome?

WTF?

ETA: Googling mentions something about an autistic nephew?

I was wondering the same thing!

[identity profile] marlatiara.livejournal.com 2008-10-16 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
DITTO.

Didn't you know that all disabled children are the same? I know about autism too! And um...diabetes!

[identity profile] drainbead.livejournal.com 2008-10-16 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
He probably pronounces it diabeetus.

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2008-10-16 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
*snort*!!!

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2008-10-16 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
Today, I played with a kid who will eventually be diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder.

I SHOULD BE VICE PRESIDENT!!!

[identity profile] bookgrrrl.livejournal.com 2008-10-16 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
Uh... maybe some of her dear friends are autistic. Autistic queers.

[identity profile] cappucinogrrl.livejournal.com 2008-10-16 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
I'll take you over Palin any day.

[identity profile] jeney.livejournal.com 2008-10-16 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
omg! didn't you know you aren't supposed to ever make a blog or post that expresses displeasure in the opposing candidates?!? you are in trouuubbllle now, girl.

(hefty dose of sarcasm intended)

[identity profile] realsupergirl.livejournal.com 2008-10-16 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, we were griping over this! Her 5 month old child with Down Syndrome makes her an expert on funding for autism and special needs in schools. Um, right.

[identity profile] hetterrific.livejournal.com 2008-10-16 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
I have no idea. Probably the same way that transplants are with cosmetic surgery when it comes to health care.

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2008-10-16 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
Uh oh.

[identity profile] jeney.livejournal.com 2008-10-16 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
There's a genetic link that pre-disposes Down Syndrome kids to be autistic, as well.

[identity profile] jeney.livejournal.com 2008-10-16 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
I hope you don't mind if I flame you now!

:D

[identity profile] sassywoman.livejournal.com 2008-10-16 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
Don't even get me started on her!

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2008-10-16 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
What I really think you should do is make a post of your own about "someone on your friends list" and then proceed to flame me THERE.

:D

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2008-10-16 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, that's true.

And maybe in a year or so she will see if she falls into that category. You know? Right now, her baby son is too busy smiling and trying to eat his fists and being cute.

[identity profile] jeney.livejournal.com 2008-10-16 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
But then someone would flame ME for flaming someone else AND WHEN WOULD THE CYCLE END, JUDE.

So I think I'll just go watch a movie.

[identity profile] jeney.livejournal.com 2008-10-16 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
I actually have never seen a picture of him. But like I told Patti on Facebook, if I had a kid with Downs Syndrome (please god no more babies for me!!!), I'd be an expert on every aspect of it by now. Autism included. I do see your point, though. But you know, I like her, so I'm wearing different glasses for this whole thing!

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2008-10-16 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
Enjoy your movie. It's late and I need to pretend to go to bed.

Instead I will be imagining the flames you are thinking RIGHT NOW.

xo

[identity profile] jeney.livejournal.com 2008-10-16 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
only flames of love, jude. flames of love!

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2008-10-16 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
I don't dislike her. I mean, I don't know her - how can I dislike her? She's not my choice of candidate but hey, whatever, it is what it is.

I think you can be an "expert" by doing a lot of research and you can be an "expert" by living - different kinds of knowledge. And while I would hope hope hope that she has done a lot of research on Down Syndrome and trisomies and developmental disabilities and levels of mental retardation and potential comorbidities with DS and resources in her area and all of that, I think she is just at the tip of the iceberg of what she WILL know in 2 years, and 5 years, and 10 years, and 20 years.

Does that make sense? I'm not saying she doesn't know anything about DS, or even about developmental disabilities or special education or children with special needs. But I don't know that I would want my running mate person going on national TV during a debate and painting me as an expert on autism. Because that just opens the door for some smartass like me to want to go and drill her (HA HA GET IT 'DRILL' BOY I'M FUNNY!!) about something like Rett Syndrome.

No, the Down's babies I see can't eat their fists! They try, and then they tongue thrust and the fist falls out!
