Umm... how is it that Sarah Palin understands autism better than most?

Is it because her infant son has Down Syndrome?

WTF?

ETA: Googling mentions something about an autistic nephew?

I was wondering the same thing!

[identity profile] marlatiara.livejournal.com 2008-10-16 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
DITTO.

Didn't you know that all disabled children are the same? I know about autism too! And um...diabetes!

[identity profile] drainbead.livejournal.com 2008-10-16 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
He probably pronounces it diabeetus.

Today, I played with a kid who will eventually be diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder.

I SHOULD BE VICE PRESIDENT!!!

[identity profile] buckeyebrain.livejournal.com 2008-10-16 03:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Diabeetus! Oatmeal!

[identity profile] bookgrrrl.livejournal.com 2008-10-16 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
Uh... maybe some of her dear friends are autistic. Autistic queers.

[identity profile] jeney.livejournal.com 2008-10-16 02:42 am (UTC)(link)

[identity profile] realsupergirl.livejournal.com 2008-10-16 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, we were griping over this! Her 5 month old child with Down Syndrome makes her an expert on funding for autism and special needs in schools. Um, right.

[identity profile] hetterrific.livejournal.com 2008-10-16 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
I have no idea. Probably the same way that transplants are with cosmetic surgery when it comes to health care.

[identity profile] bookgrrrl.livejournal.com 2008-10-16 11:38 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, no shit! I sure hope a transplant is covered god forbid I should ever need it.

[identity profile] jeney.livejournal.com 2008-10-16 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
There's a genetic link that pre-disposes Down Syndrome kids to be autistic, as well.

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2008-10-16 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, that's true.

And maybe in a year or so she will see if she falls into that category. You know? Right now, her baby son is too busy smiling and trying to eat his fists and being cute.

I find Sarah Palin manipulative and annoying, but that is just me.

[identity profile] colleenod.livejournal.com 2008-10-16 12:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Um... it's nice if Palin understands what parents who have special needs children go through, to at least some extent.

But when I heard McCain talk about it, my first thought was, "Um, she isn't going to be first lady. She's going to be vice president." It just seemed kind of Nancy Reagan-just-say-no, Barbara-Bush-literacy, etc. One of those nice, social issue-ish things for a woman to take on. Let the men deal with the economy and foreign policy. Palin will care about the children. Gag.

I'm not saying that we don't need politicians to advocate for children with special needs, better funding for educational programs, more research, etc. I used to be an exceptional children's teacher. We totally do. But it kind of struck me as a lame selling point for national office.

[identity profile] dustyskinandall.livejournal.com 2008-10-16 04:09 pm (UTC)(link)
But she IS campaigning for first lady, in my opinion. Where has Cindy been since Sarah came on the scene? Invisible.

I bet it's Todd. Sarah diagnosed him with Asperger's when he wouldn't talk about their relationship.

She's like Bill Frist that way, can diagnose just about anything.

[identity profile] estrange.livejournal.com 2008-10-16 03:32 pm (UTC)(link)
That's what I was confused about too.

dufus

(Anonymous) 2008-10-16 03:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I totally think he just forgot what her little guy's diagnosis was. So when he said autism he really meant down syndrome. He made a huge mistake (over and over again) because he is a giant turd. Just my guess.

Re: dufus

[identity profile] amyura.livejournal.com 2008-10-17 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
That makes him a stupid turd as well, then. We already all KNOW the cause for Down's, and the current "treatments" that are used with kids who have Down's (maximum inclusion in mainstream educational and social situations, treating them as the individuals they are) work very well.

[identity profile] yerbrainondrugs.livejournal.com 2008-10-16 04:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Clearly she knows better because she's a hockey mom. Duh!

Hey, it took him a long time to remember the word Autistic, give him credit for that. He was going to use the R word until his speech writers thought better of it.

Yes. I'm going to hell.

[identity profile] eeka13.livejournal.com 2008-10-16 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
...what? "Tard" doesn't start with R...
