Reason #4786955

I have, for as long as I can remember, wanted a pea coat. I love them. I think that dark navy pea coats are quite possibly the best kind of coats ever. I would see people wearing them, or see them at their houses, and I would covet them.

I'm not usually a coveter. But they are so great, and I can't usually get myself to buy a coat. I mean, that can be a pricey purchase, and I'd usually rather spend the money on other things.

Last weekend, Jennifer and I went to Old Navy to spend her gift card, and I was going to spend a little bit of holiday money. I picked out a pair of pants. And then, on a whim, I tried on this coat, which was neat but didn't look all that good on me. It was on killer sale, though.

And then Jen said, "I think you should go try on the pea coats instead." And she pulled sizes off the rack and gave expert opinions, and when I wasn't sure, she said I really needed to buy the coat. She did this by telling me over and over how good I looked in it, with this great little glint in her beautiful eyes.

And I spent the money. And I bought the coveted dark navy pea coat. AND I /LOVE/ IT.

I LOVE PEA COATS!! I used to laugh at my mom's but that's all come back to bite me in the arse!

I really like the ones at Old Navy, too! I saw them when they first came out and thought I'd see 1 out of 4 people wearing them from then on - but I haven't! In fact, you're probably the first person I "know" who has one!

I'd love to wear a pea coat myself...then it'd be a PeasCoat...but I have to admit that it looks like I'm wearing a pup tent!

Funny you should say that, because I saw three pea coats just last night! Granted, I don't know if they were from Old Navy, but still - they're still sharp looking coats!

And I think you definitely need a Peas Coat. That would be too funny. When I got mine, I worried that I would look like a sausage. I used to have this all-conditions gore-tex jacket from LL Bean and when I would button it, I totally looked like I was stuffed into a sausage. Ewww!

I've been wearing the same peacoat for 7 years. My peacoat was my dad's from his beginning days in the Navy (around 35 years ago, I think), and it fits like it was made for me (dad was a short~shit Italian). It even has our last name stencilled on the inside! how cool is that?
It doesn't look old at all, either.
I love my peacoat!

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2003-01-03 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
That's totally cool! I always wanted some of my dad's military stuff, but I never really got around to looking through it.

[identity profile] osuptygal.livejournal.com 2003-01-03 09:06 am (UTC)(link)
I'm completely addicted to snatching up my dad and brother's old military stuff.
I grabbed this awesome silver belt buckle with the "dolphins" and sub name on it (goes with those adjustable fabric belts)...one of my dad's "dolphin" pins (I always want to secretly put them on the inside of my coat, but am afraid the pin will fall off), and a couple of his zippo lighters that have his name and the sub he was on..they are super~cool looking..I just have to get fluid and flint for them.

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2003-01-03 12:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Once I took my dad's maroon beret. But then all I could think of was that "Raspberry Beret" song, and I had to give it back.

I should root through everything and find one of his olive coats. That would totally rock.

I really wish you had talked about this before.

I have one that I never wear.

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2003-01-03 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
You should wear it, and then we would be twins!

[identity profile] laurajones.livejournal.com 2003-01-02 03:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, honey, I bet you look SO hot in it!! Loving me some pea coats over here... And some you...

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2003-01-03 05:40 am (UTC)(link)
I caught a glimpse of myself in the doorway at work yesterday, and I admit I looked particularly sharp since I was wearing the black turtleneck sweater I look good in. I thought Ms. Jennifer was going to pass out! ;)

Aren't they just the greatest coat ever?

I have a black one that I love love love! ($30 on kiddie-rack clearance at Target is almost as good as Marshmallow Fluff.) I should take a picture of it sometime, it's dressed up with a silver-and-enamel dragonfly pin. (:

It still kills me that you can wear kids' clothes.

[identity profile] crazyveigh.livejournal.com 2003-01-02 04:27 pm (UTC)(link)
why do they call them pea coats?

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2003-01-03 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
I have no idea! You should do a google search and tell me!

Re:

[identity profile] crazyveigh.livejournal.com 2003-01-03 07:21 am (UTC)(link)
I tried to! And there's just tons and tons of sites selling them. I think that it might be since there's 2 buttons all the way down that it's something like, "2 peas in a pod = pea coat!!" or something.. but that is weird. :)

I am so smart!

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2003-01-03 08:13 am (UTC)(link)
"Pea Coat" (http://www.mrfa.org/terms.htm)

Sailors who have to endure pea-soup weather often don their pea coats but the coat's name isn't derived from the weather. The heavy topcoat worn in cold, miserable weather by seafaring men was once tailored from pilot cloth.. a heavy, course, stout kind of twilled blue cloth with the nap on one side. The cloth was sometimes called P-cloth for the initial letter of "pilot" and the garment made from it was called a p-jacket.. later, a pea coat. The term has been used since 1723 to denote coats made from that cloth.

Yay for pea coats! Mine is black, and missing a button. And I love it. Even though it itches. Emjoy!

[identity profile] zuzubailey76.livejournal.com 2003-01-02 07:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Mine is missing a button too! I was hoping my mom would sew it on, but then she went and broke her arm. Such is life, I guess.

[identity profile] cappucinogrrl.livejournal.com 2003-01-02 07:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I lost my button :-(

She has two arms, doesn't she? Heh. Just kidding.

[identity profile] osuptygal.livejournal.com 2003-01-03 09:09 am (UTC)(link)
mine is missing a button too!
they always sew them on too tight at the dry cleaners, when I get them fixed
grrrr

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2003-01-03 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
Mine has a pretty good lining and so far isn't itchy at all. It /is/ more bulky and stiff than my previous coat, but I will break it in!

[identity profile] cappucinogrrl.livejournal.com 2003-01-03 11:58 am (UTC)(link)
heh. Mine has lining too. I mean the outside of the coat. See, in school, I do this thing during class where I fold my arms on my desk, put my head on arms, and fall asleep. But my school is about 50 degrees most of the time. So I wear my pea coat throughout the day. Yet, the coat is itchy, and my cheeks turn red from leaning on it.

Solution? Take off pea coat, fold it so satiny lining is face up, and sleep on that. In case you ever feel like a nap while in your coat.

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2003-01-03 01:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks for the tip! It's been a long time since I've been able to sleep at a desk!

(It's about 50 degrees in my office. I empathize.)

[identity profile] zuzubailey76.livejournal.com 2003-01-02 07:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a dark navy pea coat.

You want me now, don't you?

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2003-01-02 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
We're like twins!

And as my brother says, we all know that girl twins have to dyke it out at least once.

[identity profile] auntiesiannan.livejournal.com 2003-01-02 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I love them too :) Does it have buttons or toggles?

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2003-01-03 05:42 am (UTC)(link)
Those cute buttons with the anchors.

Sometime you just have to spoil yourself. Not always, but if it's something you've wanted for that long, doesn't it feel gooooood?

Yay!

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2003-01-03 05:42 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, I keep bouncing around prattling on about my coat! I think Jen's sorry she told me to buy it!

But in reality, it was on sale for $50, so it wasn't even much of a splurge. I'm just cheap!

[identity profile] kieron.livejournal.com 2003-01-03 06:28 am (UTC)(link)
note to Jude: I am *not* sorry you bought it. I am really *happy* that you bought it and it makes you so damned happy all the time:)

It doesn't take much, you know? :)
