Calling All Mamas!

I've decided that instead of griping about not having a baby yet, I'm going to read lots and lots of good books on parenting and babies. (Hopefully the library has them all!)

So... recommend some good momazon books for me! Thanks!

We've gotten good advice from "How to Raise Your Spirited Child"

I've seen that one. I'll have to check it out.

The Essential Hip Mama : Writing from the Cutting Edge of Parenting

The Hip Mama Survival Guide : Advice from the Trenches on Pregnancy, Childbirth, Cool Names, Clueless Doctors, Potty Training and Toddler Avengers

Breeder: Real-Life Stories from the New Generation of Mothers

Mamaphonic: Balancing Motherhood and Other Creative Acts

boston public library had them all in 2003 when i read them. (copley branch). they can transfer them to the closet branch to you.

oh, if they have "You Look Too Young to Be a Mom: Teen Mothers Speak Out on Love, Learning, and Success" get that too. you might find it interesting. several of my friends have essays in it.

PS: I still have your sleeping bag but i'm completely homebound so i can't leave thehouse to bring it to you. :(

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2005-06-29 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks for the suggestions! Man, I will be reading for a loooooooong time!

It's no big deal about the sleeping bag. I know you were in the hospital for a while and now are laid up, so I have been trying to think of days when I could go get it and see you... and then I remember that almost all of my free time is spent either writing thank you notes for funeral gifts or cleaning out my dad's old house.

Blah! I hope you're starting to feel better!!

[identity profile] being-homeless.livejournal.com 2005-06-29 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
those books are way better than "what to expect..." and all the typical books. oh... there's "your pregnancy week by week." but thats cool when you are pregnant to look at. its cool in general really but it means more when you look at it in the stage you are in then 3 years in advance. i'll have a kid when i'm 27. i already have a turkey baster. a Michael Graves turkey baster. gotta have a designer babydaddy. ;)

hey... the cool parenting websites are www.hipmama.com and www.mamarevolution.com
mama revolution has queer parents message boards. i know most of the mamas there. they are lotsa LJers. :)

i'm just keeping my couch flat. i think my couch is sick of me. :(

i'm not contagious or anything, but if you are sick it's not a good idea for you to come here cuz i'll get sick easily at this point since my immune system is weak. :(

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2005-07-03 01:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I definitely want to come see you soon. And don't worry, I won't come if I'm sick! :)

Things are just really out-of-control busy for me right now, which totally stinks. The only time I'm free is when I'm sleeping!!

I hope you feel better soon!

I've really enjoyed reading "The Lesbian's Guide to Pregnancy" -

....but I have to warn you.......
........it makes the babylust worse by about a flurzillion.

I had to put them away.

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2005-07-03 01:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I read that one. And you're right. It certainly doesn't help with the babylust.

Thank you.

p.s. When I move I've decided you have to be my new best friend. You have no choice. Just so you know.

Also, I am going to steal Hannah and A-belle.

[identity profile] anitsirk.livejournal.com 2005-07-03 02:31 pm (UTC)(link)
that's fine.

if you steal my kids, though, there'll be trouble. ;)

Operating Intructions by Anne Lamott
Callie's Tally - I can't remember the author.

Both journal/memoir types of baby's first year. I own them both, so you can borrow them if you want.

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2005-07-03 01:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, I will borrow them from you sometime. Thanks!

Taking Charge of Your Fertility: The Definitive Guide to Natural Birth Control and Pregnancy Achievement

Birthing from Within: An Extra-Ordinary Guide to Childbirth Preparation -- by Pam England, Rob Horowitz

I second:
Operating Intructions by Anne Lamott &

The Hip Mama Survival Guide : Advice from the Trenches on Pregnancy, Childbirth, Cool Names, Clueless Doctors, Potty Training and Toddler Avengers

I fucking hated what to expect. but I think if I were pregnant again I'd have it on hand just for fun. It does have a lot of info, easily found. But it is sort of silly, telling ppl to measure their thighs to make sure they're not getting too fat, and keeping up to the rigid this-is-what-happens-this-month format. I found that reading a few months ahead was helpful. But do not read the "when things go wrong" section (like 1/4 the book from what I remember.) And don't expect it to talk at all about home births or any of that crunchy shit. This is for women who plan their c sections around their nail appointments. But still, it has it's plusses.

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2005-07-03 01:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I've read the What To Expect books (I thought of it as job training, but who was I kidding, my families don't read books) and I didn't like them at all - they're just not in sync with what I want to do.

I need to read TCoYF sometime soon, although I'm still crossing my fingers and waiting to see if I even end up with some sort of regular cycle. It would be nice if I even HAD some fertility to take charge of. We'll see.

You da best.

We should be mamas together!

[identity profile] carina-s.livejournal.com 2005-06-30 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
I never read any. Except bipolar ones.

Want to come with me to CA to visit Lara?

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2005-06-30 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
I wish I could. But our savings account is significantly lighter after this month of crap, and we're going to Florida to visit Jen's parents in August (so I can't take more vacation).

But thank you for thinking of me.
