Bullets of Goodness
- I listed that anonymously-mailed self-help book on Amazon the other day and it sold almost immediately. Thanks to our passive aggressive friend, I will soon have $10. Sweet, free money!
- We (Jodie, Jennifer and I) met up with a friend of mine from my hometown for brunch on Sunday at the Pour House. Aside from us all having a totally delicious breakfasty meal, Chrissy made sure to tell me that I looked amazing and that she loved my hair. We hadn't seen each other in quite a while (couple years at least), but we should see each other way more often if she's going to smatter me with compliments!
- It was so awesome to have Jodie here for a weekend, even if I was a poopy host who was totally lethargic for most of Saturday thanks to my Friday Night Pukitude. I wish she was my next door neighbor, because I never want her to leave.
- Jennifer and I had an incredibly productive talk on Sunday afternoon which will hopefully lead to bigger and better things for us.
- We got a little bit of money from my dad via my grandfather and were able to pay off the craptastic car! Now whenever we leave Boston and need to invest in a second car, we won't have to finagle a second car payment.
- I started my first Metformin increase on Sunday (was supposed to be Saturday, but due to puking I didn't want to risk it) from 1000mg to 1500mg and so far have had no side effects.
- My cats are quite simply the most adorable cats ever. Ever. Yes, they are cuter than yours.
- All the homies say I'm pretty fly for a white guy.

I have PCOS, too. I've been diagnosed for quite some time now and have never been offered Metformin or any other insulin regulating drugs, nor have I asked about them. I'm going to my to see my gynocologist on Wednesday and have been thinking about asking about Metformin. Have you noticed a significant improvement in any of your symptoms?

Good luck at the doctor's appointment.
I don't have a lot of symptoms of PCOS (no cysts, not a lot of hair, some acne but not terrible, no big weight shifts) but I /did/ have slightly elevated insulin and slightly elevated testosterone. Metformin got both of those down to normal limits. Also, before Metformin I hadn't had a period on my own in 2 years... and I had 4 periods in 2005! So yes, there has been a significant difference. (I'm not exercising more or eating better, either, and I lost 15ish lbs last year.)
My reproductive endocrinologist is now doubling my dose of Metformin from 1000mg/day (as a maintenance dose) to 2000mg/day (to try to make me ovulate more)... I'm at 1500mg right now.
I haven't had a period since December 2nd, though, so it's not perfect.

Thanks for the well wishes at the Dr's office, sorry I couldn't get back to you sooner.
It's interesting how this syndrome affects women so differently. I think I've got such a weird case of PCOS. I have almost all of the symptoms: the acne, the facial hair, the obesity, the weight shifts, the irregular periods, thinning hair and I had my whole left ovary removed because of a cyst that had enveloped it...yet I have no insulin resistance. What I've been told in my past is that in my particular case, the estrogen that is produced in my body is converted not to estrodial, as it would in a healthy woman, but into estrone which is then used in my body in the same way that testosterone is used. So, hormone panels tend to come back normal for me.
Anyway, I've been to my ob/gyn now (yesterday), and we talked about Metformin. In my case, since I have no insulin resistance and I'm not trying to ovulate, there is no reason to go on it at this time. However, both of my parents are diabetic which greatly increases my chances of developing the disease later in life, so if my PCP feels it would be beneficial, I may still need to go on it to try and curb that from happening.
Thanks for being so open and talking about it with me. :-)
