Well, there's a short profile with stuff like race/ethnicity, hair/eye color, height/weight, education. And then there's a longer profile with health history, sexual health, substances, etc.
ooohhhhh, yeah! i loved the shopping around, but probably because it never got to a stressful level for us, b/c we ended up going with a known donor. but i thought the shopping was fun--so much potential, so many possibilities for what your child would look like and all that. we're so excited for you guys! and hey, let me know if you want info about the various online places (related to baby stuff) i/we hang out. some are for all folks starting families with donor spe*m and some are more queer specific (but not exclusionary). unrelated: got the library book in the mail. gonna return it today when i go to work!
I found the shopping around kind of stressful... but probably because we HAD to pick someone. There were so many things that we wanted in a donor to be a good match to Jen, but that proved impossible! So we had to decide which things we didn't want to budge on and which we could. And then there's choosing the right bank. We ended up going with the one in Boston (seriously, lame reason) because the shipping was cheaper. Gah, there are so many hidden expenses!
I can't believe we're doing this. Seriously. Scary stuff, the financial risks if it doesn't work.
Also, I'd love info about the online places, if you get a chance. :)
I'm just curious... what is the average cost of sperm these days? I asked my Mom to buy us sperm when we were ready, and she said she would! Of course, I have to finish school, get a job, and get some health insurance first...
Well, it varies a little from bank to bank, but the average is about $300/vial (you use one or two vials per cycle). Plus shipping (can be up to $200). Plus our clinic has a storage fee to keep your sperm in the deep freeze ($330/year).
So we're thinking of buying 3 vials to start. $900 for sperm + $75 shipping (we're going with a local bank and can use a courier service) + $330 = OUCH. And that's not even touching the actual insemination procedures and stuff!! It's scary.
Good luck with your own journey! p.s. When are we ever going to meet you, anyway? :)
