Out of Touch

Yesterday I attended a friend's wedding and another friend was wearing a new pair of shoes. Other friends were oohing over the shoes (that's how I knew they were new) and talking about how they were "Fluevog's." I had never heard of this type of shoe so I said, "What are Fluevog's?" and was told that they are very fancy-pants shoes. (And they are, in fact, very lovely.) And then I said, "Where does one buy these Fluevog's?" and was told, "At the john Fluevog store on Newbury Street."

So I am quite old and out of touch. At least in the realm of fancy shoes. Because I didn't know, even while they were talking, whether Fluevog was a /brand/ of shoe or a /style/ of shoe or what! I guess I'm just a crappy shoes kind of gal. :)

At the wedding, a number of the groom's family members did this traditional Ukrainian Bread Dance. There was an informational card on the table about how this special Ukrainian Wedding Bread is made and what it symbolizes and all of that, and it was very nice. And then the family members were doing those Eastern European high kicks and bouncing around with the bread and there was a lot of polka music and the women were doing these line kicks and these spins and let me tell you, it was majorly kick ass. Everyone was clapping and one relative got so into the spinning that she fell into an arrangement of plants! Damn, I wish I had some sort of cool ceremonial thinger.

My grandmother is Ukrainian. She married a Portuguese dude, so I guess she kind of stopped doing a number of Ukrainian things aside from making pierogies and galumpkes and things like that. I think I'll ask her if she knows about this mysterious Bread Dance.

Didn't I ever make you an honorary jew? So then you'd have the Hora. ;)

I only know what Fluevog's are because Melissa's like a major shoe freak and has a pair.

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 11:27 am (UTC)(link)
Hooray, I've always wanted to be an honorary Jew!

I've heard the word "Fluevog" but never really knew what it referred to, only that it had to do with shoes.

The first semester that I taught composition a student wrote a paper about going to upstate NY every summer for a camp that was basically about teaching the children of Ukranian parents about the culture. The paper was interesting, but now I can't remember any of the details--go, figure.

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 11:28 am (UTC)(link)
Interesting. Very interesting. I guess reading student papers gives you a wealth of information at your disposal. That appeals to my inner Nosey Parker.

I was the maid of honor at my Ukrainian friend's wedding four years ago. It wasn't a strictly traditional wedding, in that it was held outside (in her SIL's backyard, no less) and conducted by a JP, but they incorporated a lot of traditional elements into it. Lana and I waited in the house, guarded by her husband's godmother, and Greg and his best man had to bribe the godmother with a bottle of vodka in order to get in and "get" us. At the end of the ceremony Greg's sister and her husband presented Lana and Greg with gifts of bread, wine, and salt, which I guess are traditional Eastern European wedding gifts symbilic of the new life they start together. And yeah, they did a variation on the bread dance with some special bread that you have to get at a special Russian store. And the food was perogis, blintzes, and sausages.

The only ceremonial thing we did was "growing up on the South Shore" ceremonial. In honor of countless middle-school dances, the last song played at our reception was "Stairway to Heaven." Oh, and I did Irish stepdancing.....in my floor-length gown.

[identity profile] indigodove.livejournal.com 2006-05-21 04:15 pm (UTC)(link)
One of my favorite pics from our wedding was my best friend and I Irish stepdancing, me in my floor-length gown and crinolines, her in her bridesmaid dress. We are both holding up our skirts and grinning.

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 11:30 am (UTC)(link)
Awwh, I wanna see!

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 11:29 am (UTC)(link)
Ha ha ha! Stariway To heaven! Our traditional high school songs were "Piano Man" and "Wonderful Tonight." Oh, the drama.

But that sounds like fun at the wedding. And I looooooooove pierogies!

If it makes you feel better, they are rather obscure shoes. I know about them because of a link [livejournal.com profile] slytherincess posted a couple years ago. It's been downhill ever since.

And I post about them rather a lot.

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 11:30 am (UTC)(link)
I don't often follow the links about the shoes. Sometimes you post photos and I think about the shoes, but since I am not a shoe-ey, I guess I missed the details.

[identity profile] sassywoman.livejournal.com 2006-05-21 05:07 pm (UTC)(link)
If it makes you feel any better I've never heard of the shoes either!

[identity profile] buddhafly4224.livejournal.com 2006-05-21 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah, me either. i don't think it's cause you're old, maybe just dykey. ;)

[identity profile] sassywoman.livejournal.com 2006-05-21 05:16 pm (UTC)(link)
HA! Well, I'm straight and haven't heard of them. I think it must be because we spend too much time online, or we are lacking "fashionista" qualities!

[identity profile] buddhafly4224.livejournal.com 2006-05-21 05:28 pm (UTC)(link)
haha nono i meant jude! but i totally agree with all the rest.

although i do like to think of myself as somewhat of a "fashionista." :)

[identity profile] sassywoman.livejournal.com 2006-05-21 05:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry, I'm a bit slow this morning. I get it now. Duh! I wish I were a "fashionista", lately I'm just looking for clothes that will fit without having to go to the plus size store!

[identity profile] kat-chan.livejournal.com 2006-05-21 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm a size 14, and I'd recently been reading about how size 14 is a "plus size", and I was left thinking "since when?" I know that I'd always been able to find my size in a regular store, but now I'm wondering if that's going to be changing soon. More shaming of people who don't fit into the pencil-thin mold.

[identity profile] sassywoman.livejournal.com 2006-05-21 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I waver between a 14 and 16. Lately with IVF and hormones I'm pushing a 16. I was watching the Today show this morning and they had a "plus size" girl on during a fashion piece and she looked normal. The rest of the chicks looked like they hadn't eaten in days. I hate that this is so pervasive in our culture!

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 11:34 am (UTC)(link)
I KNOW! I hate looking at the model ads in Lane Bryant and you can't help but think, "Those women would NEVER shop at Lane Bryant!"

[identity profile] sassywoman.livejournal.com 2006-05-23 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Hmph! Damn society making us think we are "plus size" when we are just normal people who EAT!

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2006-05-23 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Mmm, I sure do love to eat.

[identity profile] sassywoman.livejournal.com 2006-05-23 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
Me too. Damn hormones!

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 11:33 am (UTC)(link)
They do have a lot of Size 14s in the plus-size stores, but in my experience those 14s are bigger than the other stores' 14s. If I try on a 14 at Lane Bryant, say, the pants don't usually fit me at all. But a 14 at the Gap or something, it's a lot tighter.

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 11:31 am (UTC)(link)
But I haven't been very good at being dykey lately, either. :)

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 11:31 am (UTC)(link)
Oh good, it's not just me!

[identity profile] exoteris.livejournal.com 2006-05-21 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought fluevog was that flying machine contest.

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 11:27 am (UTC)(link)
There's a flying machine contest?

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
See? You really DO learn something new every day!

[identity profile] vlindinhauer.livejournal.com 2006-05-21 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)

~~~
I have a pair, I wear them only on Fridays ... and not every Friday either. They are "ox-blood" in colour and claim to ward of Satan on the sole. They are cool looking and solid, but the least comfy of my small footwear arsenal. The Fluevog has some very delicious and highly impracticle footwear for the female of the species. Mine are barely acceptable: hence my ownership, and due to the quality: still in rotation.
I trust your "coif" was a hit at the event ...
I've seen some of the shoes via links on a friend's LJ, and I can see how they are interesting looking but look like they would hurt a ton to wear. I can't imagine being in pain from shoes. Then again, I sit on dirty floors all day with snot-nosed little kids... so my standards are not very high.
The hair was definitely appreciated. A friend even said, "Err, I just noticed that you are wearing a dress and curls." All of your shellac held out until the very end of the night.
[identity profile] bellabooks.livejournal.com 2006-05-21 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Practically all of my shoes are Fluevogs. It saddens me that I did not impart the love to you. I am a terrible friend.
[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 11:25 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, you're a good friend who knows I don't care much for shoes. :) Besides, another friend just told me Fluevog is a major Fundamentalist, and that scares me a little bit. :)
[identity profile] quinniepants.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
old! zing! little known fact- fluevog is a rabid christian. hence, satan resistant shoes. it's not just silly, he means it. even though if you go to the store on newbs, you'll see that the company is not shy about hiring the homo-est homos that ever homo-ed. i wish we could go to the shoe store together.
[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 11:24 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, now that you tell me this, I think I'm going to have to check it out. Christian, Satan-warding shoes that cost big buxx0rs? Christian shoes sold by homo-y homos? I have to see this!
How do you know all of this good stuff?
[identity profile] tool-of-satan.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 03:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Take it from me, they don't work.
[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
True, Shani spends a lot of time around you. Fluevogs be damned!
[identity profile] grrlpower.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 12:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I used to wear fluevogs, back when I was in High school and could waste alot of money on shoes. the best were the 'angel soles', that resisted oil as well as satan. I considered them a step up from doc martens..
[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Where did you get so much money in high school? Wow, I'm totally impressed. :)
I am going to have to do more research on these shoes. Information just keeps piling up!
[identity profile] grrlpower.livejournal.com 2006-05-23 01:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I started working when I was 12, didn't have alot of expenses ;)
[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2006-05-26 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
I worked too, but I didn't make much money. Hrm. I was robbed!
[identity profile] calledmara.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Weddings: Fuck this Hora, Bread dances, and Irish step stuff. Marry into my family and you can dance in a a pig trough to a polka at a family wedding! But only if your siblings marry out of order.
Fluevogs: So pretty, but so expensive. I'd love a pair but can't justify. They make lots of dykey styles too. I only know what they are because they have a store right by my bus stop home from the clinic.
[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
They have a Fluevog store in your neighborhood? You are way past bourgie now.
And you HAVE to invite me to your wedding so I can see you dance in a pig trough.
[identity profile] calledmara.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah, the Fluevog store is in the neighborhood where I volunteer. My neighborhood features more crackpipe stores than fancy shoe boutiques.
You'll have to come to one of my brothers weddings. Dancing in the pig trough is my punishment for not marrying quick enough.
[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2006-05-26 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
You just let me know when you have to dance in the trough and I am SO there. You'd better get me an invitation to that wedding, too, so I can eat the yummy Delphos food.
