yep, that sh*t sucks. we're currently weaning Zach off "the arm". Overnight, he's pretty much slept on our chest or on an arm since 6 weeks old. (Or in the hammock). But, along with getting him to sleep on the crib mattress, it's been working pretty well to get him to fall asleep NOT on the arm. Of course, then we tend to roll him over to his belly. But he will fall asleep/sleep on his side or occasionally on his back.
I'm sorry that your arm had that freaky thing happen. It is really weird when you lose control of a limb. Especially in the middle of the night, I'm guessing!
Oh, and re: the swaddles. It was pointed out to me that it'd be cheaper for you to just go to a Joanne's or whatever and buy a 48" square of flannel. You don't even have to hem it. You can handwash it (just soak and wring out) if you don't want it to fray, but really you could machine wash it and cut off the frays if they happen.
