Once upon a time there was a little boy named Jude. Jude was in college in scenic Hempstead, Long Island, NY. She was at that point of coming out where one says things like, "Labels are for canned food," when people ask how one identifies. So people got creative. Jack took to asking, "You're not straight, are you?" on a semi-weekly basis. Steve chose to introduce her saying, "This is my friend Judie. She's less than straight." It seemed futile, at the time, to make bones about it either way, since our hero was dating a lovely blonde boy Ricky Schroder look-alike and it didn't really matter.

She started meeting some people that got her thinking. There was Ailyn, a lovely young fresh-out-of-high school thing who, it was discovered through the grapevine, had a crush on our boy. After Ailyn (who got sent away by her parents to get her away from all of us naughty, evil Hofstra-and-LIGALY queers who had converted her) was Louise who, while swimming in a sea of Ecstacy, cornered Jude with the staccaco serenade of, "I've never had sex with a woman but I know I'm bisexual and I think you're really cute so I hope you're not freaked out by that but I know you're Ronnie's friend and I'm Louise and I'm on E right now but I think you're cute and have you ever been with a woman and do you like girls and I should go inside now and..." until Dominique loudly announced, "Jude, didn't you want to /show me your dorm room right now/?" which she did, but Louise left her thinking. Or, more to the point, her lack of indifference about Louise left her thinking. Hmm. There must be something to this chick-loving thing. The honest-to-goodness first Admitted Female CrushTM was Cynthia Armistead, whom you CDIers know as Anne. There was something safe in an online crush that would never come to fruition, of course. It was never supposed to. But it was admitted.

Our Boy became a senior, lost her Jodie, moved into a single in Vanderpoel. It was at this point, apparently, that in some crowds she started giving off big gay vibes. Steve, the gayest boy in Vanderpoel, had just moved in. They introduced. They chatted. Apparently (though Our Hero doesn't really remember this) Jude's introduction centered around how she would sleep with Tori Amos in a heartbeat. Whups! Steve became co-president of GALA, and his partner-in-crime was the lovely Ms. Wendy (who eventually dropped out of college to move in with her folk singer girlfriend, how stereotypical is that?). Jude's sublimation of Wendy-desire (since the lovely Ms. Wendy wanted to /date/ Our Boy who was, if you remember, dating Ricky Schroder) took the form of smooching every cute grrly grrl at Chameleon (and, well, there weren't a lot of them, truth be told - it was mostly boys).

But the whole point of this story, you see, is that Jude became closer friends with The Amazing Kieron [insert theme music here]. Kieron was hard core, wonderfully butch and, on the outside, very self-assured (this wasn't the case, though. is it ever?). As the two became closer friends, Jude found her little stony heart going pittypat at the thought of her friend, who began making an increasing number of trips to Hofstra from New Jersey (okay, okay, so I missed the hint!). She could never tell Kieron this, though. Oh no, Kieron was an uberdyke and Jude was just a girl with a mop of hair who was dating a blonde boy from the 80s. Kieron would surely laugh at her and smirk. "You don't like girls," she would say, "You're experimenting. You have a boyfriend. You don't have a clue. I am the uberlesbian!"

They spent time together, and Jude spent time keeping her mouth shut and talking about Ricky. Kieron grew suspicious of the girls from GALA who would hang out with Jude, but said nothing. They celebrated their birthday (for they have the same one) - Jude's 21st and Kie's 22nd. Kieron got carded and they paraded her ID all over Houlihan's. The server got $1 and a 'Clue' card. "You have been presented with this Clue because you are in desperate need of one." Good times, as usual, were had by all.

(The way these stories go, of course, is that Kieron the Amazing did, in fact, like Our Boy. Isn't that always the deal?) Kieron held her tongue (literally, even) and tried to devise a little test to see where Our Hero's mind was in terms of All Things Chick-Loving. So Kieron called and asked Jude if she wanted to go see a movie. "Okay," said Jude, "what movie?" "Bound."

Much to the credit of Jude's Catholic School education, "God" intervened in the Subtle Plan. When they got to the only movie theatre in their area playing "Bound," they were told that the ferocious rain storm from the night before had made the roof collapse in Just That Theatre and they could not see the movie. Jude suggested "Romeo + Juliet." She was thinking, "Claire Danes is hot!" Kieron thought, "Oh, yay, a str8 movie." Experiment failed.

Kieron dated Elizabeth, and then Merion. Jude went on to become Mrs. Ricky Schroder. In July, Jude was no longer Mrs. Silver Spoons (well, outside of the legal sense). In November, Kieron and Merion parted ways. It's been five years since the last NJ to Hofstra trek. Reunion - New Years 2001-2002.

Goth, I missed my friend! Thanks, Kie, for coming back in touch, for being you, for never forgetting Our Birthday or the fun we had or our Hofstra adventures. And thank you, so many years later even though I'm much more confident now, for not laughing when I told you about my Big Hofstra Crush in 1996.
