I got up at 6:30am to get to Whitehall Yearling High School for 7:45am, only to find out that no one was in school because of proficiency tests. My boss was supposed to call and find out, but yesterday evening (when I called him), he said he thought school was on as scheduled.

So I got up for nothing. Boss suggested going out for coffee, but I decided to go back home until 1:00pm or so. My first obligation is staff meeting at 1:30, and I want to make a few calls. I told him I was going home to do personal things.

Of course, I should be using these free 4 hours to write papers, right? So I am online, gabbing. I put my laundry in the washing machine to make myself feel productive a little bit. In the car on the way back from Whitehall I thought about what I would write in one of the sections of my Adolescents paper - the section on "how social work has historically dealt with the problem." That part's easy.

Tonight after work, I'm headed back to Kaleidoscope, you know, since I have so much free time. When I was there last night, one of the youth told me that he was leaving Columbus on Friday (to move to Cleveland) and they were having a going-away party for him tonight. I was thinking about dropping in tonight anyway to see Patty, but now it's an imperative. He lit up when I told him I would come, so it's all worth it.

Last night at KYC, I learned some fantastic ghetto slang. There is an insurgence of young African American males in the group these days (which isn't surprising, since there's not a lot of support for them in their community) and they were hysterical last night. When new youth come, a lot of times they want to know about the volunteers - what their sexual orientation is, where they're from, etc. One youth asked Johanna and I if we were lesbians, and then if we were together. When Johanna announced that she was the "token straight girl," another youth said something like, "In my neighborhood, they'd say you stric'ly dickly." Chuckle. One of the youth was playing old TLC songs, and now I want to download the MP3s. I'd forgotten how much I miss "Baby Baby Baby."

Today I'm going to remember to call my professor about the tae kwon do independent study for next quarter, and I'm going to go to Borders to get a book I need. Yeah. Productive. That's me.

Right.
