Well thank you. I'm nuts because I'm writing this:
?Professional organizations representing more than 477,000 health and mental health professionals have all taken the position that homosexuality is not a mental disorder and thus there is not need for a ?cure?? (American Academy of Pediatrics et al., 1999, p. 5). In the National Association of Social Workers? Code of Ethics, social workers are professionally bound not only to refrain from discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, but also to achieve cultural competency in the area of sexual orientation (in Poulin, 2000). In its Policy Statement on Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Issues, the NASW further discourages social workers from encouraging clients to change their sexual orientation through interdisciplinary referrals or from purporting to help them do so themselves (1996). Similarly, Morrow (in Anderson, 2000) states that an integral part of social work practice with queer adolescents is ?active advocacy and intervention? (p. 372).
This American Life did a show, probably a few months back now about the fight to change the classification of homosexuality in the... shoot, the big book o' psychiatric disorders, the name of which I can't remember now... from a mental illness to a normal behavior. It was really interesting. Dunno if you could find it archived on their site, but it might be worth a look-see.
Lesse, go to http://www.thisamericanlife.org/ and look under Episodes, by year for 2002 - it's called 81 words, broadcast in January. You know, when you have a free moment or two. *hee*
That is true (there was a discussion on someone else's journal about the term). Some things to ponder... Gypsies do not exist as a group in the USA, therefore the term "gypped" has been taken out of its original context and given a meaning unrelated to its origin. Many words we use today have origins that we're unaware of.
Also, when you travel to Europe, the first thing any of the travel books tell you is to keep your valuables tight to you, because the gypsy kids are excellent pickpocketers and they WILL get into your pockets and get your wallet without you even noticing. If they don't want people picking up derogative terms towards them MAYBE they should quit stealing from everyone!
I don't think it's racial ... more ethnic, I suppose, if anything. They all look the same as everyone else, but they wear scraggly clothes. I suppose you could call it a way of life. Like "homeless people" are here. I personally have not seen a gypsy who doesn't pickpocket though.
Unfortunately, real life is not like the gypsies in "The Hunchback of Notre Dame". They may have used to be like that but not anymore.
Probably :-) We didn't move there when we were looking for apartments because they're not spacious enough (don't have basements). And now that we've got 2 dogs and 3 cats, well, we'd probably get evicted. :-)
A bad jest.

(We got the notice on the door last week. Maybe if we hold out a little while longer, they'll buy me a pony!)
