They might be big, big, fake, fake lies!
Apr. 7th, 2002 12:34 pmYesterday was the official night of They Might Be Giants. I hadn't seen them since 1997 when rainy, Jodie and I saw them in Boston, and it was time. I missed them last time there were in town, and I was rather determined to see my two favorite musical Johns (my Jostipants not included). I asked
qaphsiel to come with, and he agreed. He did not know what he was in for.
Concert review here!
The opening band was called okgo, and I really liked them a lot. They opened with a cover of "Jesse's Girl" by Rick Springfield that really got the crowd going. I liked their fast songs better than their slow songs, but well, I'm like that. Fast. Zoom, baby. They played a decent-sized set, and I liked it. The only annoying thing was this guy behind me who /really/ liked them, and yelled "YEAH!" at the end of every song and in every quiet moment of every song. The problem was that he said it the EXACT. SAME. WAY. every time. Same tone, same inflection, same duration. About 35 times.
TMBG came on next, and they played a lot of old stuff, which is good. They played about 3 songs of their upcoming album ("No" out in June), one of which I really liked (Four of Two) and 3 or so songs from "Mink Car" (which I have never heard). Otherwise, they played all of the old staples: Ana Ng, Shoehorn With Teeth, Birdhouse In Your Soul, Particle Man. They also played a bunch of other things that I like, like James K. Polk (which included confetti and glitter), that song about The Sun (which included fire eating, YAY! FIRE FIRE FIRE), Older, Fingertips, I Palindrome I, Dr. Worm (which made me think of my boyfriend, of course), Boss Of Me, Meet James Ensor (which is the only song they played off "John Henry," boo), Minimum Wage, The Guitar, and a bunch of others.
When they played "New York City," I of course had to call Jode. I couldn't hear, though, so I don't know if she got the call, or if it was messed up, or if I got voicemail. I think I heard it ring, though. I hope so!! I waited all night for them to play it, and they played it last before the first encore, and I was growing impatient. Love you, Jode.
They gave away the glockenspiel (G-L-O-ckenspiel!), which everyone associated with TMBG had signed (VERY cool). A boy in the front of the area who looked about 17 won it, and they brought him on stage and reprised "Shoehorn" so he could play the note. My god, he looked like he was going to faint, but so, SO happy. I was thrilled just watching him get ready to hit that note and then carry his glockenspiel away. Very awesome.
I had glitter in my hair from James K. Polk which I thought was a nice touch, and they did a lot of really funny TMBG-esque things, like fool around with the drummer, have the other guitarist do a big acoustic guitar solo, and play with the radio (and sing "You've Lost that Lovin' Feeling" hee!). It was a ton of fun. When I saw them in Boston, we were too far away from the pit to take part in TMBG-craziness, so last night, I made Cary join the conga line with me, which snaked all through the packed-in front, which was fun. I only moshed a little, though (SAD!) because there were HUGE, ANGRY MEN in there (I mean 7' tall, punching each other and almost getting in fist fights angry), but I knocked a couple of people around, and that makes me happy!
The two big downers were said 7' tall men who decided to cram in front of me (so we had to move over), and this gaggle of young girls (after we .had. moved over) who were ganging up, running, and pushing this one boy (to flirt with him, ugh, they were goosing him and giving him wedgies and stuff, too) into the people in front of him, which caused some strife. They stopped before TMBG came out, though.
One nice thing was when I told this waif of a girl who was visibly shivering to go into Chipotle and warm up, and I held her spot for her. I've rarely seen such appreciation. ChivalrousJude.
I was so thoroughly sweaty, and my tshirt was all stretched out, and I didn't see
crena, and my knees were aching from jumping up and down for hours, and my calves are sore this morning, but WHOO. I'd missed TMBG. I always am in awe at how much I love those two totally nerdy guys. :)

Date: 2002-04-07 08:30 pm (UTC)Wow, they've mellowed since I saw them a few years back.
Granted, it was a small club I saw them in, where really the floor area was the only seating. General admission.
They announced very early on that the mosh pit was located in the parking lot.

Date: 2002-04-08 06:27 am (UTC)I remember seeing them in NY when I was in college, and there was always a HUGE conga line. This one wasn't nearly as big, but it was still fun. :)
