It's almost my brother's 30th birthday. I am suddenly feeling very old.

I think of college like it was my childhood. I occasionally remember blurbs of high school. I remember when my brother went away to college, and I remember when we started getting closer.

It seems like a million years ago that he and I lived together in Puffton Village in Amherst. It was 1994 and 1995. Hell, that was 7 and 8 years ago. We /are/ getting old.

My brother is turning 30 next month. Once, he threw a computer joystick at my head. Once, he sat upright in bed, convinced I was hiding in his closet. Once, he gave me his favorite tshirt, because it looked better on me than him (a light blue Santa Cruz skateboard shirt, with Natas's current skateboard design). Once, he teased me about liking Mark Recorvits. Once, he made hydrochloric acid with me in the basement. Once, he taught me how to do donuts with the car in the snow. Once, he kicked me out of our apartment - and then recanted when I packed my things.

My brother and I have always been very different, but we have always liked a lot of the same things (and even some of the same girls). When I was little, I was sad an awful lot, and he would make fun of me and say I was overreacting, and a baby. Now, though, I see that he held a lot of his pain in, and it has shaped who he is and what he's like. I let mine go, and things are much different on my end. But we still like a lot of the same things.

My brother introduced me to, in no particular order: the Indigo Girls, REM, Simon & Garfunkel, skateboarding, punk rock, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, 95.5 WBRU, using chopsticks, Billy Madison, the Greek alphabet, 7 Seconds, Jack Kerouac, The Dead Kennedys, beer, The Rocket in Providence (which I do believe later became Club Babyhead, which might be defunct), saying, "NOT" after stuff, and the Shower Ghost.

I intoduced my brother to, in no particular order: TinyTIM, The Basketball Diaries, paganism, Men Without Hats, Big Poo Generator, ER, Kids in the Hall, Jim Carroll, various girlfriends, Jeckyll & Hyde's, Chipotle, Voice of the Beehive, and Me First and the Gimme Gimmes.

Sounds like a fair trade. :)

My best friend in HS (elaine) had a cousin who dated one of the women in Voice of the Beehive (he was in the band That Petrol Emotion). She got to like, hang out with them and stuff. I never got to meet them, and that made me sad.

...and Me First and the Gimme Gimmes...

Bwah! I didn't know you knew these guys.

I love their stuff!

Wow - how totally cool is that? I don't know anyone famous.

Well, that's not entirely true. One time in high school when I went to see The Dead Milkmen, I ran into the guitarist/singer named Joe and we chatted a bit. My friend Josh and I ended up making a deal to take pictures of the show (Joe let us stand on stage if we promised to send him copies of the pictures).

Throughout my first year of college, Joe wrote to me. Handwritten letters. I still remember Jodie's face - "What the hell are you doing getting letters from the Dead Milkmen??!"

except of course sometimes it doesn't matter. I'm not an only child, and my brother and I could not be more different; while I spent the 80s being an acting geek and playing roleplaying games and reading sf and running off to Toronto every chance I got and listening to new wave and punk and early ska and hip hop and brit pop, Mike spent it sitting in the basement with his friends, or going to parties and getting wasted, and being a typical suburban teenager; by his own admission he tried to fit in more because his older sister didn't. He played sports, and had a string of girlfriends, and listened to rock and heavy metal and hung out in the smoking area.

These days, for better or for worse, we're the product of that. He's married, he lives with his wife in his suburban house, and sometime in May his first son. He doesn't do as well as I do when I work, but he does better than me because he's found a good job managing a trucking company, and his work is steady. He owns a pickup and they just bought a minivan, because they're planning on at least one more kid. His wife sells Mary Kay. No, really. They're very, very happy.

You've seen my life, at times. You know it would kill me.

Now You're my hero!

Hee - you and your Leo fixation, it's so cute!

I actually didn't like the movie all that much, probably because I read the book so many times I had practically written a movie in my imagination.

But oh well! :)
