I just got mail from the Social Work Licensing Board that says it takes 2-4 months to receive your license.

How the crap am I supposed to get a job?

would it work if you just went to the dmv and asked for a state issued id? i had to do that when i lost my license.

Oh damn, I had to go through the *same* bullchit when I needed my teacher's certification. After I paid them more than $200 to take their silly tests and process my application, they told me it would take them 2 months to send my certificate. What the heck is up with that?

Hey, you mean you have been illegally working society on me without a license ?

What's up with that ?

Seriously, if you know you have passed certification (do you ?) can't you just say to Prospective Employer, hey, don't have my license yet, but will. Like showing them whatever you have that proves you did in fact pass ?

She needs a license to practice social work, not ride a moped.

I take it showing this letter to a prospective employer wouldn't be enough proof?

I have no idea how they expect me to look for a job. I mean, it's not like I could have applied ages ago or whatever -- I need to have graduated first so I can send transcripts!

Dude, that Tiki God is pretty funny.

Tell ya what... if I get everything done and my test done before I go to RI, I'll go.

Well, the letter is the "information I need to apply for licensure." I haven't taken the exam yet or anything (I need to graduate first), so I don't know how it works.

I'm hoping that I can go to a prospective job with my test score and say, "Look, I passed, I'm just waiting for paperwork."

Hopefully I can do that after I take the exam. It's computerized, so you get your results right away. I hope that's enough.

And yes, I have been working unlicensed, because I was a student intern under supervision.

I'm sure you could get away with that.

Unfortunately, insurance companies might not pay without a license certificate number or whatever, and no one will hire someone that won't earn money. Hee.

But I hope you're right!

I don't know if this has any bearing on your situation, but the one person I know who got a Master's Degree in social work had a job lined up a week after her graduation ceremony.

it's not uncommon, i know similar things happen with the CPA exam, probably the bar as well
if they're serious about you they're going to know that you've just graduated/just taken the exam and be aware of the turnaround time. they'll probably just ask to see proof once the license comes through.

i wouldn't fret overmuch about it, focus on all your skills n'stuff ^_^

My coworker has a job now, too. Then again, she's already an LSW (Licensed Social Worker) and has been in the field for lots of years - she's just coming back for a Master's.

There are jobs that don't require licensure... I just really don't want one of those. I want to continue doing therapy.

in the mean time....

after w. took the bar, he had to wait 6 months to see if he passed. my brother paid him better to be a "caulk smudger" for his roofing company that it did to be a law clerk. Check the yellow pages under "ROOFING" if caulk smudger might tide you over :P

Dunno if it's the same or not, but my sis-in-law got her Master's in Speech-Language Pathology and I remember her talking about waiting for her license to come in the mail. But she was working already when it did.

Hello, your friendly neighborhood Social Worker here.
I just showed prospective employers my letter certifying that I passed the exam and they were a-ok with it. Gotta love immediate gratification results after completing the test!
They will run a background check and stuff /anyway/ and unless you have an Independant license, as soon as you join their agency, you will be accountable to a Supervisor with an Independant license, so that's how they get around it. ;)

Love ya!
(ps, did I mention you were in my dreams last night? .....................................................................................................................................................................Naked? *blush*)

You're joking, right? (About the dream, not about the license... which is very good, very important info, thankyouverramuch!)

That's really only something /commercial/ insurances look for, usually. Believe it or not, your Medicaid patients can usually be served by a lesser or unlicensed person and still get reimbursement.

And, additionally, some insurances will pay if the therapist is supervised by a person with the appropriate licensure.

Believe me, they'll find a way to hire you if they need people.

No, I am totally /not/ kidding about the dream.

It was way bizzare, faintly sexual, definitely odd.

I stopped trying to figure out my dreams long ago.

Btw, in case you were wondering, you looked /great/ ;)

CPA's are a little different. In addition to an exam, you're required to have experience in field before you can get your license. And yes, your experience is under the supervision of a CPA. I've passed the exam but still need my experience. I have coworkers who have the experience but haven't passed the exam yet.

(Of course, we have one up on Canadian CA's. They have to slave away for a year or two in a firm--"conditioning"--before they even get to sit for the exam.)

But I digress. If passing the exam is your only hurdle, can you be hired on some kind of provisional basis?

well that was my point, you all(regarless of passing/experience) work at the firm, do you not? so not having the license is not a bar to employment
