I know you're all missing me terribly. My computer, unplugged, is currently in the middle of my living room directly in front of my television. I am really unable to use either of them. This is very sad, and very boring.

I went to Mel's last night to watch Magnolia (which I love) and do a little laundry. It was pouring rain when I left, so she gave me a garbage bag to put over my laundry. (This would come in handy later.) Little did I know the adventure was about to begin!

I got home and noticed there was an excessive amount of water pouring from the roof of the house. Due to the flash flooding, the water overflowed the gutters on the top of my house, and the water was pouring directly into my entry way. At this point, I noticed that things sounded very sloshy, and I set down the laundry to get a closer look. It was at this point that I realized that there was about a foot of water in front of my doorway covering the first step. This is, of course, because they took off my awning last week to replace it.

I didn't know what to do. I knew that opening the door would be a bad idea because then all of the water would flow into my apartment. I figured there was already a great deal of water in there. Ugh. I needed something to get the water out with. It was midnight, and I began scouring the neighborhood. By some act of providence, I found a bucket. I then began bailing out my entryway. After about 15 minutes of solid heave-ho, there was enough water gone so that I felt safe opening the door.

MY APARTMENT WAS FLOODED.

True, it wasn't as bad as it could have been. The entry way of the apartment was covered in about an inch of dirty water, and that water had spread to a large chunk (about 3' x 5') of carpet. This happens to be the section of carpet where the surge protectors for the computer and the television are, so I shut off that outlet and moved the cords and the CPU. Bleh. Then I took my garbage bag out of the garbage can and placed it in my outer entryway under the big torrent of water so it wouldn't overflow my drain again. I went back inside and put a big blanket over my entryway, and spread towels around the rug. (These towels are now ruined. Oops.) I left a message for the landlord, yay.

I went outside to check on the garbage can. It was full, so I dumped it and started again. The rain was beginning to slow down, so I went back inside and dried the kitchen floor and part of the entryway. I moved most of the stuff off the floor and gave love to the cats, who were entirely unthrilled.

Cut to today. My landlord came around 9:30am and surveyed the area. He said there would be an "extractor" who would come and take the water out of the carpet. When I asked about mold, he said that he would disinfect the carpet. I am /so/ skeptical about this. The pad under the carpet is entirely soaked, and the wood is completely squishy. Yuck. Underneath the linoleum is likely also rotting. The place where the linoleum and the carpet meet was where the majority of the water was congregated.

Anyway, now there is a huge forced-air machine sending strong currents of air underneath my carpeting, but it isn't reaching all of it. Some is dry and some is still totally soaked. This, of course, is all on my electric bill. Yay. This afternoon I realized that it was so wet in my apartment that all of the postcards and stickers on my refrigerator were limp and curly, so I took all of them off and stuffed them in a cook book. I turned on the dehumidifier, and I can breathe a little better in there, but the dehumidifier only blows out hot air and I really don't want my apartment to be too much hotter. The landlord also has erected a ghetto awning out of a blue plastic tarp. Can it get any better?

Tomorrow they are coming to take the forced air machine and likely clean the carpet. I am still very nervous about mold and rot. I don't think that throwing a fan under my carpet is going to do the trick when the whole thing was drenched with muddy water, but I guess we'll see what happens. Both of my cats were all over the landlord. That can't be good.

My landlord is at the top of the list.

Anyway, I don't know when I'll be able to move my computer back and set it up again. Tomorrow maybe? Sulk. I don't know what to do with myself tonight. If you have my number, call me and take me out of my house. Please.

Holy shit.

I am SOOOOOO sorry.

If you need anything at all, just let me know. I don't know what all is damaged, but if you need replacements of stuff I need, just let me know.

Is your computer ok? It's not ruined?

It doesn't take a lot of water to cause damage to the floor, so please be careful about.

On the bright side, he can't bitch about that cats. You've got a flooded apartment. That kinda trumps a visiting lump of calico.

Please let me know if I can help. in the mean time, *BIG HUGS*

I know it's only small comfort but those anti-mold things do work pretty well. The third week of our marriage the water heater pump thingie exploded, t was at work and the roomie was cowering the corner refusing to talk to the landlady. I, who was not on the lease but fortunately we were moving out the week later, had to help the landlady dry everything out and all that. I was SO worried about mold and mildew since I am really, really allergic to both. And not only had this water soaked through the carpet pad it had soaked through to the apartment below us so I mean SOAKED.

But no mold, no mildew, nothing. Not even water stains. I was AMAZED.

Sorry, your post reminded my of one of my favorite 10,000 Maniacs songs.

I am sorry about the flood waters, but hey if you get bored, I have Donnie Darko and Amazing Grace until Thursday at noon...

Magnolia was okay, although i dont think it helps to watch the second tape first. In fact, it doesnt and it leads to utter confusion. (especially the urinating scene)

Occasionally, I am a prize idiot and flood our laundry room by letting the utility tub stop up, and that is a big freaking mess. Hope everything is all better soon!

WTF IS WITH THE WEATHER?!@#

We had major flooding too yesterday but none of the water made it into the house (THANK GOODNESS!)

If I were you I would be VERY anal about detecting mold after this guy finishes all this work. I would also attempt at making him pay some of the electric bill.

First sign of mold, you get new carpet .. but hope for the best because moving all your stuff around would be so annoying.

The computer (as you can see) is fine. The carpet was soggy but the computer doesn't sit on the floor, so I put it someplace higher (the sofa) and everything was fine. Is fine. Seems to be working fine.

I've had one landlord and at least 3 work people in here in two days. With both cats. No one has said a word yet. We'll see what happens.

I'm really glad to hear this, and I totally trust you because I know how allergic you are. Here's hoping! :) The forced-air machine dried almost all of the floor/pad/carpet, so we'll see.

My apartment currently smells like pine sol! BLEH! But the floor was sooooo nasty.

All of these suggestions - and no way to receive them until it was too late!

Oops. Thanks, though.

Yeah, I have no real desire to move everything. It was a pain enough to move enough furniture for him to spread the pad around again. NO MOLD! Pleeeeeeease!

That's a sweet offer, Ms. Milla, but I just got the message and everything's pretty much done. You have to trust me that you don't want my help decorating - I am such a horrible decorator!!

[livejournal.com profile] doulamel is much more into decorating. Yeah!
