I can't decide which tshirt I want to order for Pride:

  1. Peace, Love, and Lesbians

  2. Hey Mister, You Got a Sister?

  3. The Binary Gender System Sucks

Of course, I'm also up for suggestions, but I'd like it to come from DykeTees.Com if possible, because I want to support [livejournal.com profile] technodyke. Right now, I'm leaning toward "Peace, Love, Lesbians" for the 'cute' factor, though they are all neat in their own ways.

So, a poll:

[Poll #140847]

Other shirt suggestions in comments, please. Thank you. Once again, I am incapable of making simple decisions.

I'm actually planning to buy the "Nerdy girls make me hot" logo in the yellow messenger bag someday, actually. I've been eyeing it for months. :)

Some of the images are too big for me to want to wear them on my chest. I'm weird about tshirts.

"You're crazy!"

Ha ha - actually, up until this morning, the "gender binary" shirt was the one I was sure I was going to buy. And then I made the mistake of looking around and being all unsure.

On a side note, I think it's funny that you and Jen picked the same shirt! ;)

I like the "Gay Mafia" shirt I found once. It's black with hot pink lettering and a pink rubber duck on it. I'll see if I can find the link if you're interested.

honestly, i don't see how you could really believe that a binary gender system isn't vastly superior to any other type. think of the combinations you have with a single gender...well, you have yourself and that's about it. so that's not really a viable evolutionary method for a complex species that is able to control its population. a worm may have both sets of sexual organs, but that doesn't work too well for a human. three sexes or more is clearly stupid. do you know how difficult it would be to get three people (one of each gender) in the same room to reproduce? i'd like to see you draw three sets of genitals that are actually ALL compatible with each other. i submit that it cannot be done without making TWO apparati on each person. it doesn't get much simpler than "peg fits into hole". you have lots of pegs, and lots of holes. no chance for stupid people to fuck it up and have the species become extinct. with four genders...all you'd have to do is dislike ONE of them, and you'd never reproduce. considering how difficult it is for a gender to accept the other in a BINARY system, accepting THREE other genders is out of the question. it would kill off the species in a thousand years, flat. not to mention the cellular mechanics of conception with four DNA inputs boggle the mind...

I think you are misunderstanding the difference between sex and gender.

As you were saying, it would be difficult to imagine three sets of genitalia. However, intersex individuals (those who used to be called 'hermaphrodites') are people who have ambiguous genitalia or a combination, somehow, of both types of genitalia. So in some ways, there /is/ a bit of a third set.

Regardless, we're talking about the /gender/ system. Gender is a construct influenced by society. It has nothing to do with pegs and holes.

Thank you, drive through.

Gender roles and degree of masculinity/femininity may be construcs of society. I meant the word gender in this sense: "The condition of being female or male; sex." (taken from www.dictionary.com (http://www.dictionary.com))

I take it that the t-shirt was more of a comment on how people are unnecessarily categorized by their gender into specific roles that might not be appropriate for all members of that gender. Is that a more accurate interpretation of the shirt?

Note: Hermaphrodites are sterile, which is why there aren't too many of them. They only occur by a weird coincidence of things, and will never be more than a slight fraction of the population because they can't reproduce, so you'll never see a second-generation hermaphrodite.

Partially. The shirt is actually meant to bring awareness to the situations of transgendered, transsexual, intersex, and other genderqueer individuals who may not fit inside the Binary Gender System.

And of course you won't see a second-generation intersex person. That doesn't deny their existence.
