No one can read them but me (because I don't want Jen to see)... but people have named restaurants (or types of restaurants), movies, etc. And when you get to "What should I wear?" they all wrote "nothing"!

When I was working at Philmont Scout Ranch, the staff had a "Mr. Philmont" contest every year - like a beauty pageant for Boy Scouts. (Yeah, homoerotic much? I know.) Anyway, we (at the Training Center) got one entry (each department did).

My second year there, this guy Kevin (who was hysterical) was our Mr. Philmont. He worked at the Kit Carson Museum, so he had all sorts of period clothing for his formal wear. But at the bathing suit portion, he wore a barrel with suspenders! It was totally hysterical.

Of course he won. GO PTC!

Philmont is a beautiful place. It's like a magical land that shouldn't really exist - it's that beautiful. I would love to go back and visit.

Working there is amazingly fun. I got to meet so many great people from all over, and see so many different perspectives. I would try to find a way to go back there and work, if it wasn't a financial and a moral impossibility. In some ways, I gained a lot of respect for Scouting. It was suggested to me (and I actively considered) that I should take up a career in Scouting, be a professional Scout like a District Executive.

Wow - that would have gotten really sticky, I think. I'm glad I didn't end up choosing that path - I don't want to think of the ramifications and discriminations. (Although I'd be harmless to young boys! *wink*)

So yes, I was an actual card-carrying Boy Scout, a member of the National Council for two years. And I have all of the official uniform stuff.

Would you like a Philmont patch? They're hard to get. :)
