Crazy little thing called work.

judecorpThings are settling in a bit more, which definitely pleases me because (as you can probably all attest) I'm not so great at adapting to change. I'm starting to recognize some people, and they're starting to recognize me, and that always helps. (It's always nice when people say hello to you.) My supervisor is making little jokes with me, and that helps, too. I'm starting to really like the coworker (Sarah) who has been belabored with the task of letting me be her shadow. She's a lot of fun and has a great personality, and she's really approachable. And I didn't do much sitting around today, either.
Another plus is that I'm already getting the reputation of being the resident computer nerd. There's a lot of "don't call IT, just call Jude" stuff going on in the workplace, and that always makes me chuckle. Today I helped a girl move a photo attachment from her email and set it as the wallpaper on her computer - totally easy, but she was running around saying, "Jude rocks" all over the second floor. And then, of course, I had to help someone else do the same thing, because she was jealous. How do people /not/ know about computers?
The great thing, though, is that the woman who I'm shadowing has been really good to me. She's fairly new herself, and is still learning the ropes in a lot of ways, so we've sort of been learning together. For instance, she recently got her first new case (she has like 30 transfer cases from random workers who have left) and had to write (from scratch) her first new case plan ever. She really didn't have a clue, so we sludged through it together. She kept asking me to check her stuff, or she would type things and ask, "Do you think this is okay?" It's nice to be respected even though I'm new - she's always going on about how I have an MSW and a license and experience. How cute!
This evening she was talking with one of her clients, and it was not a pleasant conversation, but she handled it really well. I sort of just stood there (so I wouldn't be excusing myself while this man was emotional), and we walked to our cars together. On the way, she asked me if I thought she was being appropriate. I was really honored that she would ask my opinion, even though I'm the new person. I like that she (and some other people on the team) is very open - everyone seems to learn from each other (since turnover is so high, there are always new people) on my team, which doesn't seem to be the case on the other teams. Yeah.
Chaz has also been really good about helping me keep everything in perspective. I think this will work out, at least in the short term. I mean, I doubt I want to be in this same exact job when I'm 35 or anything, but this will definitely prove to be a good move and some valuable knowledge and experience. I'm pleased.
(Oh, and I was showing pictures of fishersimmons to some of the girls at work, and he was a HUGE hit, of course!)
