Also, in the Murphy's Law realm, we got the on-call schedule for 2004 for work. I'm on call three weeks in 2004. Three weeks out of 52.

Of course, my smurfbrother's wedding falls into one of those weeks. Now I need to beg and plead someone to switch with me. La la la la lightbulb.

The whole year? That's absurd.

Where I work a monthly calendar is circulated prior to each month of on-call, and you just X out the days you will not be available. I've been taking Sundays only.

Well, in some ways the year thing is good because you can plan ahead or whatever... (like, I can try to find a person to switch with /now/ instead of at the last minute), but in other ways it sucks because someone will /certainly/ quit some time in that year and then they'll just be switching it around again.
