I got to spend some time with my favorite twins tonight.

I had thought that I might be working late, but I'm going to do that Thursday instead of tonight, so I agreed to watch [livejournal.com profile] crena's children for a few hours so she and Scott could go out. Holy crap on a cracker, but sometime between today and the last time I saw them (which was, what, a month or two ago?), they have gotten very old.

Tyler was making up this "math homework" for me to do that was all about "highlighting the big numbers," which I think was just an excuse for her to color the whole paper green. We wrote stories. Tayler read at least three books to me, and she's a very good reader. Tyler taught me a card game, and at first I thought it was some made up stuff, but it was an actual game with rules that made sense! And Tayler was showing me some number game that she says an uncle or other relative taught her. They are amazing.

The highlight of the evening, though, was when the girls put on "a performance" for me and the cats. They started by singing some song that they had made up about the sun and the moon, and that turned into cheerleading. (I think I encouraged that though, oops.) Later, they put on a CD and I was the audience of a dance recital. I didn't know which was more endearing - the goofy kid-type dancing or the horrifically mature MTV-like dancing. How exciting it is to be six-going-on-seven!

All I can say is, I'm SO glad that there were no video cameras when I was a child. When I was a kid, my friend Natalie and I would do performances for my mother all the time, with songs and dances and skits and costumes. And I guess tonight I got a big fat reality smack about just what exactly we must have looked like. The whole time, I could just remember wearing my mother's clothes and singing some "Soldier, soldier, won't you marry me?" song with Natalie in my mother's living room. And I wished I'd brought my camera, even though I know that Tayler and Tyler will be very thankful that I hadn't... when they're older.
