Oh my goodness, I am almost too embarrassed to admit this:

Last night when we were at Dave & Buster's, Daina and I were walking around looking for a video game to play. I got completely obsessive about this bear and moose hunting video game. I played it over and over again, and whenever I would be "successful" and lethally shoot the bear, it would keel over and die and I would yell, "YES!" excitedly. It was so bizarre, because not only would I never go hunting, I would never touch a rifle ever.

I am horrified and ashamed. But it's true.

I'd never go hunting, although I see the need for people who do, sadly. But damn if I didn't love target rifle. It's actually quite relaxing.

Whoa...you rebel!

I just beat the shit out of people on VC. :) Sometimes it's good to do things out of character!

right? i LOVE grand theft auto: vice city. now, i'd never kill a cop in real life, in fact being raised in a policeman's family probably has instilled more respect for police than anyone i've ever met. BUT... when i play that game i'm on the edge of my seat screaming at the tv! "TAKE THAT, PIG!" "DIE, SCUM!"

heheh. POW!

the funniest part was you so clearly felt guilty the entire time you were playing!

But no bears were really harmed so it's ok. I like to shoot things in video games too but I'd never do ti in real life ;-)

Oh please. I am bleeding heart pinko liberal who hates guns, but I get enormous guilty pleasure out of playing those arcade games where you have a gun and just play merry hell with gunfire.

I am likewise obsessed with House of the Dead. It's zombies...but the idea that I would love a shooting game...shooting anything... seems beyond me.

Who knows.

But perhaps having a video game that allows you to do it in a non fatal environment allows you to enjoy it without offending your morals? Some would say that playing games like this would make you want to do it in real life, but I don't believe it for a moment.

I'll second that.

There is something crazily satisfying about blowing half a zombie's head off, when I can't even fathom having a gun in the house for protection.

Don't feel too bad about it. I've enjoyed first person shooters although I can't see shooting anyone in real life; and war strategy games although I'm a semi-pacifist. While playing Civilization II I've used plenty of nuclear weapons against cities. For a conscious adult, I don't think these things are problematic.

I'm actually not a big fan of video games, but I guess I was in a real bear-hunting mood. Heh.

I think it's also funny that I would only shoot bears in Maine, and the ex is from Maine, and every time I would shoot a bear, it was like I was sticking it to him somehow.

Childish? Absolutely. ;)

Yeah, I don't believe it either. I suppose there may be some really suggestable people who might take things too far or live in a total fantasy world, but I know that my father let my brother and I play violent video games and dungeons and dragons, and watch horror movies, and we never killed anyone.

When we were in Japan we saw a typing version of House of the Dead. So instead of pulling the trigger you have to type quickly and correctly to kill the zombies. So odd! And yet it was weirdly addictive. :)
