It's amazing how certain smells can evoke truly visceral responses. The smell of the ocean has always calmed me, almost as much as the sound does - that mix of sun and sand and salt spray and seagulls and other people's sunblock is so soothing. Likewise, the smell of bread baking is so homey and comfortable, even if it's the exhaust from the bread factory rather than a loaf in my own oven.

Today, Jen and I decided to try out this crock pot recipe for "beans and tuna." All day, we were supposed to cook a pound of white beans in oil, garlic and water. It all sounds so neutral and bland, but let me just assure you that it is not. We were out from about 1:30 until about 20 minutes ago, and the minute we walked in and I caught a whiff of that crockery monstrosity I almost lost my stomach (and its contents). I'm trying to seek sanctuary in the second floor, on the other side of the house, but the stench is stalking me thanks to the wonders of central air.

Oh my goodness, I think I'm going to die. Guess what we /won't/ be eating.

I have to ask (because I'm a curious person) what you THOUGHT the mixture of beans and tuna would smell like? :)

I currently have every smelly candle in the house lit in the kitchen. It's a big stanky mess, but The Girl is making me cookies because she is the greatest!

I wish it would get warmer so I would actually want to leave the house. Lo Mein would be enticing if we didn't stuff our faces at Mongoloid BBQ about an hour and a half ago.

We will come over soon, I swear. Get rid of those bumps!

No tuna.

See, your mistake was in leaving. :) With beans, if you stay around them while they're cooking, that distinct odor sort of builds up over time and you're not aware of it. But by leaving, you let it ambush you when you came back. :)

(I speak from experience because there wasn't a day that went by when I was growing up that pinto beans weren't cooking in either our house or one of my grandmothers' houses. I ADORE the smell of pintos cooking. Don't know 'bout the white ones.)

The man speaks the truth. I don't think I'd leave beans in the crockpot. *shudder*
