I just sent my resume to children's services in Boston. Let's just say that if I got this job, they would be paying me about $15,000 more than I get right now. You know, I think that's enough to stick out child welfare casework for a little while longer until I can move into the world of supervision.

I suppose I should really get moving toward taking that Clinical exam if we're going to do this whole moving thing. kyoki_tenchiChaz, do you have any test-taking tips?

(For those of you playing along at home, The Girl and I had a very frank and practical discussion about moving yesterday. And while we would absolutely /love/ living in California, it's just more feasible for us to move to the Boston area. Not only is the rent a bit cheaper, but it seems like it's a lot easier to find apartments that allow pets. And then there's that whole 'California's social work licensing process is completely insane' thing.)

I think I need a Hip Hop name. When I was in Hip Hop training, we needed to come up with Hip Hop names for ourselves, and that's what the instructor called us. Given my line of work, I chose "No Bling," but it doesn't have a great ring to it.

Yeah, but is the 15k negated by the additional cost of living? Mean house price here in the greater Boston area is about $370k right now.

Well, it means we'd be sucking up apartment living for a little bit longer, while we check areas and see what's up. And I may inherit before we buy, also. But really, if we're paying, say, $1300/month to rent, you can buy a pricier hizzy.

Because, really, if $45K-$56K is the range for an advanced caseworker, then as you move up further, things would grow to more princely sums.

Either way, when we actually /do/ buy, we'd probably leave the city quite a bit (but stay on the commuter rail) - maybe even something further south and therefore closer to the 'rents.

I have been checking out jobs in western Mass and there just haven't been the sort of jobs that either Jen or I are looking for. But if a decent job comes along between now and spring, we will definitely apply.

The only definites right now are Massachusetts and late May.

The only reason I'm getting this PhD is so that I can become Dr Denial and launch a long-deferred career in hip-hop. The world is crying out for an English white girl to bring some street.

That's probably about right. I haven't looked at Boston listings myself, but I've seen some DC listings. It's like, what's 40-50k everywhere else is 60-65k in DC, and I'm sure the markup for Boston is about the same.

awww yeah, bahstin! seriously, it's expensive to live here, but it's expensive to live anywhere worth living and this city is great. you can buy a house out in quincy or braintree or even roslindale for not so much. but why would you, when you can live in glorious jamaica plain! and throw all your money away on rent, like me! let me know if you're applying at children's hospital in boston, i gots the hook-up in psychiatry.

You have the hook-up at Children's? Oh DO TELL, because that would be smurftacular. :) Seriously.

I know how expensive it is (because I used to live there) and I know how cool it is (because I used to live there), but I also know the cool ways to make it less expensive - and I plan to do that as much as we can. (You know, I actually like JP quite a bit, but I'm guessing we'll probably start by looking in places like Waltham and Somerville.)

And then you can show me all of the great places to drink PBR!

dude, slummerville sucks. you pay just as much for a shithole there as you do for a decent place in jp. but waltham is a different story... when i lived in medford i cried all the time because no one would come visit me though. it was like living on a cootie island. let me know what you're applying for (which depts, positions) and i'll see what i can do. i'm in neuropsych, i'm tight with social work program coordinators and outpatient psych administrators. at the very least you can put my name down as someone who referred you. chb prides itself on nepotism.

You are the coolest ever. Hopefully by the time I'm actually up to applying for positions (when it gets closer to moving day), there will actually be some social-work-type positions available. In a perfect world, I'd be able to work with the Child Protection Team (which investigates abuse allegations) or the Boston Happens Program (which works with HIV-infected and homeless adolescents), but really, I'd take any /good/ social work job that paid well enough for a 2 years post-MSW LCSW.

Or something. If you know people, I'd love to say I know you! And if you know of postings that aren't on the web, even better! :)

I like JP, as long as there is good transportation nearby, 'cause we're thinking of getting rid of one of our cars.
