Money money money MONEY
Mar. 9th, 2004 04:53 pmI remembered this morning that I have this piddly little retirement account from when I was a Research Assistant at UMaine. At one time, I think there was about $1000 in it (I think I put in 1%, and I made, oh, $19K?) but the whole stock market bust hit my little account hard. And then I forgot all about it. Well, I called them this afternoon and I apparently have about $650 and they told me that if I cashed it out now, the IRS would take about $59. I'm wondering if it's worth it to cash it out for the moving fund or to leave it there for a million years and see how far $650 can go. Decisions.
Also, today I got a letter from ODMH (Ohio Dept. of Mental Health) about this Program Evaluation Administrator job I applied for eons ago. Apparently I made some sort of "cut" that got mailed this lengthy 9 essay question "test" that I am supposed to submit to see if I qualify for an "interview." I realize that State Jobs take forever to process (heck, I think I applied for this job several months ago!) and I'm wondering if it's worth it to answer all of these questions and see if I get an interview. While normally I would say no (because I don't need any more confusing factors in my moving decision), it /does/ pay $25-$30/hour. Can you say "Double my salary"? I knew you could. :)
I also got a call today from a Social Services agency in Dorchester (aah, my old stomping grounds) about an Early Intervention program (0-3 years) that has an opening right now, and they wanted to know when I was moving, and all of that. The guy sounded kind of sad that I wouldn't be there until May, and told me to call them when it got closer to that time to see if anything was available. There probably won't be, and they are paying about $5K/year less than what I want, but it was nice to be called. Hrm.
Just another day, another episode on The Jude Show.

Date: 2004-03-10 12:34 am (UTC)I am in a similar situation with my retirement account from when I was working at FM. It's more than 650 but not by much. My plan right now is "leave it there for a million years," but with the knowledge that I can always cash it out and pay the penalty in case of emergency.
The penalty really isn't worth it though, it's better to use your credit card.
