FINALLY some positive job vibes!
Jun. 15th, 2004 10:07 pmAmazing! After weeks/months of sending resumes, having phone interviews, and interviewing in person, I have /finally/ had one of those 'click' feelings. Thank goodness, a positive interview experience! (I just hope the agency person felt the same 'click'!)
I was supposed to have my initial phone interview with On the Rise this morning at 11:00 AM. When 11:15 came and went with no phone call, I started to wonder if I'd misremembered (although I wrote it down). So I called the woman and left her a lame message like, 'Uhh, this is Jude and I thought we had a phone interview at 11:00.' Heh. She called back at around 12:00 and was extremely apologetic and explained that something had come up. She asked if I had time to talk, but I didn't because we were expecting
wendywoohoo at any minute! Since I had planned to drive Jen to Dedham for a job interview (and wait in the car), I rescheduled the phone interview for my waiting time.
And Wendy came, and we bolted down lunch from Panera, and let me just tell you, she is so totally cool! I felt like we could have talked and talked for hours if it wasn't for aforementioned trip to Dedham and a Puck (Puck!) left behind.
So anyway, she called me back at 2:30 on the dot and continued to apologize. It really wasn't a big deal, I mean, I'm a social worker, crises happen all the time. We just hit it off really well on the phone and she seemed to really like me. It was easy to answer the questions because the job is a really good fit for me (I won't say too much for fear of jinxing) and so the 'right' answers were already inside of me. That was a nice change. We were supposed to have a 20-30 minute interview and we ended up talking for about 40 minutes. At the end, she left me some time to ask questions and I asked my standard question (would you please give me an idea of what you're envisioning as a time frame for the hiring process?). She explained to me that she was doing several of these pre-screens on the phone and then would be passing about 4 resumes to the Director for interviews, and blah blah blah. Before we hung up, she told me that she was giving my resume to the Director. Yay! So at least I'm pretty sure I'm guaranteed an in-person interview and a 1 in 4 shot!
I'm really excited about this organization. It's totally grassroots and works with women with serious issues and crises that interfere with their ability to utilize the more standard available social services. It also involves a lot of community outreach and is entirely founded in empowerment and meeting the client where she is rather than imposing an agency's goals on a client (Hello, Faith Mission). They have an incredibly diverse staff of existing outreach workers, including a Haitian Creole woman, an African American woman, and a Latina. So of course they noticed my resume because it's dripping with TEH GAY. The woman who chatted with me stated that they are in desperate need of some GLBT outreach stuff since they currently have 3 regulars who are transwomen and a number of women who identify as lesbian or bisexual. Sweet!
I am going to cross so many fingers and toes about this one!

I never went to OTR but many of my friends do. if you get this job, do me a favor and get Gina off the streets. you'll totally know who she is right away. I can give you the scoop on her. poor kid. I wrote about her a lot last spring in friends-only entries. she'll be out there for years unless someone can interveine for her soon. :'(
