The Job Interview
Sep. 1st, 2004 10:37 pmWow, 8:00 interviews sure get your day off to an early start! I had to get up at 6:45 to make sure I was ready on time, and I ran out the door at 7:15 to get on the train. I sauntered into the office at a cool 7:55 AM. Phew!
First of all, let me just say that I felt so spiffy and professional walking up Tremont to Beacon Street, and then walking into one of the big buildings. I was like, "Wow, this is what I always envisioned what being a grown-up was like." So I went to the office and the guy who called me gave me a cup of coffee, which was definitely welcomed. He and the other interviewer were very nice people, VERY experienced at their jobs and stuff. The guy was an IT guy who helped design and run the assessment program, and the woman was a teacher for a bunch of years. They are smarties.
On some levels, I think I am a great fit for the job and did well in the interview. I definitely have enough interpersonal experience to pull off the school relations piece, and the organization to manage site visits at schools all over the city. I have no doubt that I can do the job and do it well.
HOWEVER, I doubt that I have enough of the type of experience they're looking for. I have /zero/ familiarity with the Boston Public School System and very little experience in public education, period. I did two years of work with the Maine Department of Education, and that helps, but I'm not sure it's enough. The guy who interviewed me told me that in the week since they posted the job, they received a lot of qualified responses. (So I suppose it says something that I got an interview!) They also want to hire really quickly, so he said that people being called for a second interview should know by the end of the week.
I guess all I can do, really, is sit tight and hope I get called tomorrow or Friday!
