I randomly did a Google search tonight on cities with high per capitas of lesbians. Ithaca, NY was way up there (brrr), as was Oakland, CA (pricey) and Seattle. And then I realized that while I knew there were a bunch of lesbians in Portland, OR, I didn't really know anything about the city and the cost of living.

Wow - cheap houses!! Cheap CUTE houses!!

I am now on a mission to convince my Jennifer to move to Portland, so I can ship her off to work while I become a hip and trendy stay-at-home queer mama. What do you think about that?

Sounds good to me! Portland is closer to where I live. I go to Seattle a lot too.

Oh dear. I hate to have a parade through your (b)rainstorm, but, uh, didn't you just go through this moving across the country thing, and decide that it was quite a bit more stressful than you really wanted to do again any time soon?

I have heard PDX is very cool. But we'd never see you. :( Well, unless I got a job teaching at Oregon State or something like that.

At least [livejournal.com profile] prunesnprisms and [livejournal.com profile] siercia are coming to Philly. You must not love me as much as they do. Or at least you must not have as much desire to drive all the way to Boston from Florida just to get out of the way of a major hurricane, and a corporate expense account to do it. Hmm.

If that's your major criteria, why not just move to Northampton? It's got all that and it's only 2 hours away.

Portland is fabulous. Although we have no jobs. Still, I usually hate people who move to Portland for the cuteness/trendiness factor, but you would be a very welcome exception.

Unless, we moved, too... hehehe.

Crap crap crap job market out there.

But, it is lovely. And it's where the Meglet lives.

Portland, OR is awesome, and if it's cheap all the better. But the real reason I want you to move there is I think I can get cheaper airline tickets over.

Following this excitement is about to kill me, by the way. Get the job! Get a baby! Get a house in Portland!

Yes, my wonderful hometown. (A little too full of tourists now, but it's still nice.) When I was in college, the National Enquirer ran a big story about it with the headline:
"LESBIANVILLE! STRANGE TOWN WHERE MEN AREN'T WANTED!"

My college friends seemed to think this was quite funny that this was my hometown. :)

Hee. You say this like there is some sort of serious PLAN in the works. Which there isn't. I just like to browse the country - must be the nomad in me.

(Oddly enough, the one place I didn't make fantasy moves from was Columbus, except that one time I was going to move to Boston and decided it was too pricey for me.)

And I /do/ love you! I love you SOOOOOO much, and when I get financially secure a little bit and have vacation time (which is after six months), I'd love to see what flights to Philly cost. I've only ever been there once (I had a regatta there) and it seemed pretty cool.

So there. I DO LOVE YOU! :) (Although if I had a corporate expense account, I would love you that much more.)

I like Northampton. I think it's really beautiful. I like it a lot, actually. I don't know if it really does fall into that 'affordable' range, though (houses under $200K that aren't crappy). I'll have to check it out some more.

But oh boy, does it ever snow there!

Can you believe that I have NEVER been to Portland??!?!

If this pipe dream thing ever becomes more of a reality, I may come out and visit you so I can check it out. Besides, it would be an excuse for me to meet Carey and Maren!

Yeah, the no jobs thing is a major bummer.

And as an aside, I'm glad that I am worth circumventing your relocation ire. That makes me feel warm and squishy inside! Besides, if we moved out there, think of all the sex we could have ice cream we could eat.

Yeah, I know the unemployment is really high up there right now. One of my friends ([livejournal.com profile] fumblefactory) has been fighting this for a long long time. It has to turn around sometime, right? Right?

I just really want the house and baby at this point. I definitely want to be a mama when I'm 30... so I need to figure out how to make it a reality. I used to really want to just go postal in a big city, but now that I'm actually back to doing it, I am realizing that all I really want is to grab Jen, buy a house, get a baby, and settle down into something cozy.

I can't believe I'm writing this stuff. No really.

Oakland houses are 'spensive! (I looked.)

Do you think the houses are cheaper in JP? I mean, I live in Dorchester and I can't afford houses here. I can't afford houses in the bowels of Quincy. Heck, my MOTHER'S house in the sticks in RI is on the markey for $275K.

Where am I gonna get that?

Date: 2004-09-03 10:21 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com
Yes. It does.

But that means it snows less, right? And the average summer day is (supposedly) like 75 and breezy. I think I could seriously dig that.

jude-portland is not cheap. my sister-in-law lives there. my sis and BIL and new baby-to-be live in seattle. it does not rain nearly as much as everyone thinks. my 'rents lived there, too! it does get cold, and it CAN snow. cold, being, like, 50. how rough!

so why the heck don't you just move back to C-bus with me, momma?

From: [identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com
Eh. I guess I just don't like change much, not in terms of stability. That's all. I suppose the idea of moving was such a great one because I knew Jen was so unhappy where we were, and didn't want to make any big future plans with me there because we weren't going to stay.

We just went into things a little blindly, I suppose, hopefully wishing everything would just fall into place with an audible click. It hasn't, and I'm not terribly keen on "starting over from broke" at 29 when I worked so hard getting out of that in my earlier 20s.

But everything is good, and everything will work out in some way, and life keeps us moving that way, I suppose. :)

jp is totally expensive. like, assy 2br basement condo for 300k. and that's by forest hills. yick. i *love* jp, but it's not a place to buy a home. plus you'd have to get a de-leaded place if you're having pups. impossible.
noho is good though. you can get a place there (or amherst, south hadley or wherever) for not too too much. and you can be around those hott hos on the hill (awww yeah, mt holyoke girls fo sho!). but lock your doors anyway, smithies live out there...
don't go to the left coast, those people just aren't right. even if they do have better coffee standards.
From: [identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com
It's so true. I remember the last time I lived in Boston, my boss had a house in JP and the cost of living there had gone up sooooo much that she couldn't afford her property taxes anymore.

And maybe I'm a house snob or something, but I don't want to own a condo. If I'm going to pay for something for 30+ years, I don't want it to be connected to other people! :)

Northampton is quite lovely, as is the surrounding area. It's definitely a possibility, but it all depends on The Girl and where she can make her dreams come true. And she's really in love with the west coast.

p.s. I almost went to Mt. Holyoke, yanno.
