Today was interesting. At work, we had a staff retreat that translated into NO HOME VISITS, which was pretty exciting in and of itself. But it was actually this neat staff training on diversity. Instead of sitting in random boring lectures about diversity and being culturally sensitive, we split into teams and went to each other's houses to cook foods from some of our ethnic backgrounds! We had Cooking Leaders from the following cultures: Vietnamese, Filipino, Italian, Mexican, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rican, Jamaican, Jewish, and English. I was in the Italian group, and we made lasagne, gnocchi with pesto, caesar salad, ricotta pie, bread, and cookies from scratch! I even helped roll and shape gnocchi. It was pretty excellent.

After the cooking, we all met back at work and ate TONS AND TONS of delicious food and had to interview each other on how we were raised and what traditions we wanted to pass on to our children and stuff like that. I stuffed my face with lasagne and gnocchi and maccaroons and tamales and fried plantains and sticky rice and spring rolls and egg rolls and flan and noodle kugel and curry chicken and a bunch of things I didn't know the name of and pineapple upside down cake and english toffee pudding that was like sex on a plate. My god, it was fantastic.

It was fun learning about the traditions of the people I work with, even though most of us are boring old Western Europeans. It's funny hearing about how our families have all melded together and how we worked out holidays and special events. And it was REALLY funny watching everyone pig out on food. I chickened out of the jamaican jerk wings and some of the things that were covered in ONIONS. But otherwise I was pretty brave, I'd say.

My workplace is a pretty interesting bunch!
