So I drove down to Rhode Island to eat lunch with my dad, and it was so ridiculous because he spent like two hours of my visit dragging me through Best Buy in Attleboro so he could pore through every single DVD in the store. One would think he could go to Best Buy alone, but noooooo. So I dragged my sorry, coughing butt down to RI in the snow and ended up going shopping. I loathe shopping. Afterwards we went to Friendly's because my father decided he /needed/ a coffee shake. He ended up having two. However, I got a sundae so it is all good.

While we were waiting for our table at Friendly's (who has to wait at Friendly's? sheesh! what, is the Attleboro Friendly's like the COOL place to go on a Saturday?), my father said something about Jen and referred to her as my girlfriend. I asked him what he was going to call her when we got married and he didn't have an answer for a minute and then said, "What do you want me to call her, your significant other?" I was like, "Umm, my wife," and he laughed and got uncomfortable and said no, /I/ would be /her/ wife! When I asked what that made Jen, he did some weird mumbling about how there has to be a femme and a 'butchie' and maybe I would be the 'tough one.' (But I'm guessing since I would be the 'wife,' probably not.)

Aaah, Dad. Whatever is he going to do when my Jennifer has a baby? Maybe then he'll stop calling her a lumberjack.

(Oh, and my parking spot was open when I returned! No trash can needed!)

I think that's a little harsh and absolute. I think that it's true that he often gives very little thought to other people's wants and tends to assume that everyone wants what he wants. I also think that's a pretty human trait. However, I've learned that if one physically leads him away from whatever ridiculous thing he's occupied his time with, he will walk away without incident.

Honestly, I just think that he doesn't like to go out alone. He'll just stay and watch television. So when he's in the company of others, he just wants to get out of the house.

I dunno. He's always late, chanes plans at the last minute, is fairly unreliable, and generally can be counted on to throw a wrench in any plans I have with him.

thanks! that sounds wonderful. what i wouldn't give for a veryt sweet hazelnut iced coffee from DD. i swear, starbucks has NOTHING on them!

i also miss good pizza. seems like the concept of a truly thin crust is beyond californians. or a real NY pickle. good deli.

oh, well. i don't miss scraping off the ice on my windshield with a credit card, so i can't complain. ha!

and, if you're ever in the bay area, there's plentiness of yumminess! how about a fine burger (any type of patty with spinach and feta on a fancy roll) from saturn, a queer, punk rock, vegetarian diner? they have the best fries AND a dessert called "chocolate madness". it involved ice cream, mousse, cookie dough, etc, etc. mmmmmm.....

Yeah, I prefer DD over Starbucks, although I must admit that I am thrilled that the holiday Starbucks are out, because the Gingerbread Latte and Pumpkin Spice Latte are both SO delicious! MMMMMMM.

I am a huge fan of the Bay Area. We actually really wanted to try to move there (my wife used to live there and she loves it loves it) but it wasn't really feasible. Sometimes I still kick myself about it. That Saturn place sounds really cool! I'll have to check it out next time we're in town! :)

Hunh. Maybe I just call him out on his game. I dunno. I have the privilege of being a lot closer, so I guess his shit doesn't annoy me as much. I admit I would have been more cheesed if I'd forked over big bucks for a plane ticket just to go to Best Buy.

what about w/ a university job? w/ your licensing, you could get a res life job that often offers tuition, etc. we live in a huge 2 bedroom with a private backyard, washer/dryer, dishwasher, free cable, free really fast internet, etc. my partner makes decent $ and we have no bills.

i want to try the pumpkin latte, but the baby hates the taste of coffee (decaf) in my milk. she still drinks, but she complains. i really love the peppermint mochas. mmmmm....

my new love? oh, how far i've sunk:warm milk with TWO cocoa packets.

Well, if you can somehow hook me up with a res life job in the area, I would totally, totally take it. In a heartbeat!! Alas, I have no res life experience and only a wee little bit of student affairs experience. However, I adore college life. SIGN ME UP!

And then The Girl could go to school and life would be just swell. Let me know when, and I'm moving in!

really? there's most likely going to be an opening soon here (santa cruz). the person who's leaving had a house here on campus. beautiful - but someone might take it, leaving a regular 2 bed apt.

ucsc is one of the few that doesn't offer tuition remission, but you start at $39000, so you can afford to go to grad school.

let me know if you're interested...this could be fun!

we're not like the new england and midwestern schools that require a shitload of res life experience. we look more for passion, a well-rounded life, interest, and relevant experience. would students relate to you? do you have fun with them?

greg is leaving at the end of the month. i'll let you know when the position posts, but check out ucsc.edu

I am a HUGE fan of adolescents and college students. Ask Peas, she'll tell you! :)

I have no idea why I'm so excited about this possibility. Probably because it's a HUGE shot in the dark and I am all about the slim chances. (And my partner is madly in love with California and wants to move back by any means necessary.)

we look more for passion, a well-rounded life, interest, and relevant experience.

I definitely have passion, and I would say I have a pretty well-rounded life. Interest is SO there. As for relevent experience, most of my work experience has sadly been with much younger kids. But I spent the last three years volunteering at a drop-in center for queer youth (and leading their weekly support group), and the year before that in Student Affairs.

Whee!

do you know alot about UCSC? we have a huge queer and rather large transgendered population of students, and a lot of the work/events reflect that, so that experience would translate really well - google "queer fashion show" to get some info - i could mail you a tape, too.

the position probably wouldn't open til january, and then a crapload more in june.

yeah, ucsc is awesome - and as a fellow new englander, i came out here on a whim - before the kids have to go to school, but we love it so much we may stay forever.

experience w/ younger kids can translate well, esp. w/ advocacy.

I know a little about USCS, and what I know, I like! I know that they're very queer-friendly, and that totally appeals to me, since my #1 career goal is to work with queer youth/adolescents/young adults forever and ever! I would love to eventually do that through a great university in a great state with a great climate!

I will definitely follow up on this. Please let me know if you know the position opens up, and I will totally apply for it online. :) And then I will check again in the summer. It would be great fun!

i thought you loved boston/new england though. are you just ready to say fuck it and do a little traveling?

I /do/ love New England! But I also LOOOOOOVE warm weather, and The Girl is a huge fan of California and the Bay Area. It would make her whole existence if she could move back to California.
