Lobstah dinnah

p.s. Jennifer made lobstahs in the lobstah pot I got her for our anniversary. And that was cool, except that I learned today that buying live lobstahs at the store and putting them in a lobstah bag and thinking about their impending demise just plain makes me sad for them. So I had to go in the other room and do my taxes while they were, erm, turning red. Poor widdle lobstahs, removed from their tank with all of their friends, alive when they came into my home...

But they sure were yumm-ay!

Seriously, do they have to be cooked live?

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2005-02-06 08:22 am (UTC)(link)
Well, no. You can kill them /before/ you cook them, too. (But that involves shoving a knife into their brain area, I think. YUCK.)

Alton Brown says in his Lobstah show (I *heart* Alton) to put your live lobstahs in the freezer for 10-15 minutes pre-boil to put them into a very humane slumber. By the time they are in the boil for 10 seconds, they are already gone.

Poor widdle lobstahs. :)

Oh, that's interesting. I think that would freak me out, too. Frozen lobstahs!! Damn, I wish I didn't like lobstahs so much and find them so damned tasty, because the whole idea of their poor widdle selves just bummed me out all night. (Except when I was eating, YUM!)

I'm such a hypocrite.

EIGHT LOBSTAHS!!?!???!? That's insanity!

Lobsters do not have to be cooked live. You can (ask Jennifer to) stab them between the eyes with a large knife before you throw them in the pot. This will kill them instantly and they will still cook up just fine.

I don't think they feel pain, but if you can kill them first you might as well do so.

"Poor widdle lobstahs"

Consistent pronunciation: "widdle wobstahs"

Thanks for the correction - wobstahs!

Yeah, you can stab them first, and I'm pretty sure How To Cook Everything even showed exactly where on diagrams, but that freaks me out, too.

It's not really /how/ they die, more that they were alive when they came into the house. I feel like I've betrayed them somehow.

Alton Brown also said (in the same show mentioned above), that lobsters are more closely related to cockroaches than cuddly critters like puppies. He even pulled out a phylogenetic tree to prove his point.

Not sure if that helps you feel any better about the cooking alive part. Or maybe it just turns you off to lobsterrrr (as we say it out here in Wisconsin) completely.

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2005-02-06 08:26 am (UTC)(link)
Ha ha, lobsterrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. (I actually do pronounce all of my Rs unless I'm trying to be funny. I got rid of that New England accent a loooong time ago, sometime in early high school I think.)

Yeah, I know that they are "the cockroaches of the sea" or whatever... who cares, they are delicious! And I know they're not pets, either. I dunno. It just feels weird to invite a live creature into your home and then toss him into a pot. Poor Larry Lobstah!

ooh lobstahs! livin' lahge & in chahge!

You know it. It's hard work being a rock star.

Poor widdle lobstahs, removed from their tank with all of their friends, alive when they came into my home...

Do you know why they put rubber bands around the claws of all those lobsters in the tank with all their little friends? So they won't go all snicker-snack on whoever's fingers might be reaching in to pull them out of the tank, right? Well, not exactly.

See, those little lobsters in the tank aren't exactly friends. If they didn't all have rubber bands on their claws, they'd tear each other apart.

Just sayin'... not so friendly in there, really.

Hee, I like your sense of perspective! :) I also like the way you say "snicker-snack," even though it is making me hungry. For Snicker Snacks!
