Close call with the car inspection

I went to get the car inspected today, since the end of the month is, you know, a couple of days from now. I decided to go to the fancy-looking Dorchester Tire instead of the Five Brothers place in Ashmont that I went to last year, partly to inquire about tires since the ones we have now are basically totally bald.

So I go in and I pay the money for the inspection, and the Nice Guy Behind The Counter calls me Jennifer because the car is registered to her. And I ask him, while waiting for the car, "Hey, how much would it cost for some tires for my crappy little car?" He laughs, quotes me a price, and tells me not to call the car crappy if it gets me from here to there. I tell him I'll start saving my pennies.

Not two minutes later, the Nice Man Doing My Inspection comes in and I hear him muttering to NGBTC, "Can you come check out these tires for me?" in hushed tones.

NGBTC promptly comes back and tells me that our tires are terrible (which I know) and that they're terrible enough to cause us to fail inspection. But that he KNOWS that I'm going to get new tires really soon since I already asked about it, and gives me the keys to my newly-inspected car.

To which I reply, "OKAY, THANKS, BYE!!!" and duck into the car before he changes his mind.

haha wow damn! good thing he was so nice about it!

Yeah, no kidding. If he'd failed me I'd have had to shell out another $29 to get it inspected again!

I just moved to Boston, actually Somerville. Now I can't laugh at you when you discuss how horrid your winter is!

We should get together!

Welcome to the neighborhood.

Jude,

Let me know when you are available. I have cooking classes at Cambridge Culinary Institute on Mass ave near Porter on Thursdays, but I'm available for lunch or a quick hello after that. Otherwise I'm really flexible, days are best for me though.

Just let me know, I'm excited to meet you!

Days aren't great for me because I work a 9-5. Sometimes I get out early on Fridays but I usually spend that time with my Jennifer because she has Fridays off. Weekends are good when I'm not cleaning out my dad's house, which is a major pain in the booty.

I dunno... my schedule is like this:
Monday - work 9-5ish, every other Monday volunteer 6-8:30
Tuesday - work 9-4ish
Wednesday - work 9-7ish
Thursday - work 9-5ish
Friday - work 9-2ish, date night
Saturday, Sunday - off

WHat's yours?

I don't know what my schedule is going to be after this week, but there should be plenty of time for us to meet.

Your schedule looks pretty grueling.

Eh, I wouldn't know what to do with myself if I had to slow down.

Keep me posted on what's up. We'll make something work.

that was very cool of him. now don't put off those tires too long - we don't want our jude driving around unsafely. we like safe judes. yes.

safe.

yeah. get them right away.

glad you found a nice mechanic.
I miss my super nice mechanic. (he quit)

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2005-06-29 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
He was just a counter-guy, but he was very nice. I need a nice actual mechanic. Besides [livejournal.com profile] scirocco, who likes to fix our car (for free).

I have an excellent mechanic in JP center. Patrick at West Cork Auto. He is fabulous, but doesn't do tires so he wouldn't be terribily helpful in the current situation.

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2005-06-29 12:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, tires are pretty easy because you just go to a tire place. We've been calling around to see who's the cheapest.

For comparison, Tirerack.com has these Kumho Touring Plus 732s at 4 for $180 delivered, then another ~$80 to get them mounted on your wheels and have the old tires disposed of back at your auto shop.

Thanks for the tip. We ended up going to Ashmont Tire and got two tires mounted in like 10 minutes for $120. Not too shabby.

We're actually planning to get some this weekend. We've been meaning to get some new tires for several weeks, actually, but we've been doing too much running around.

[identity profile] scirocco.livejournal.com 2005-06-29 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
It's just the FRONT ones that are really bad. The rears are OK for a little while longer.

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2005-06-29 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
No, just the opposite. The rear ones are awful. The fronts are... okay.

[identity profile] scirocco.livejournal.com 2005-06-29 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I remembered backwards, then. sorry.

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2005-06-29 12:54 pm (UTC)(link)
It's okay. It WAS you who noticed in the first place, so you still get credit! :)
