Birthday

My Jennifer and I were looking for somewhere within reasonable driving distance to spend the weekend before our birthday, and as is our usual, everything we were looking at is totally booked. We were originally going to try to go to Ptown for the night, but of course that weekend is the end of Women's Week so everyone requires a minimum stay which we just can't do. Then we looked at cute B&Bs in Northampton, but we couldn't find much available there, either. So with a lot of searching, we ended up finding a cute, woman-owned B&B in Ogunquit, Maine.

I don't know how much stuff there is to do in Ogunquit outside of beach season, and I imagine most of the vibrant foliage will be out of Maine by then, but even if we just get to spend two days doing nothing but puttering around out of the city, I'd call that a success. And because it's in Maine, we were able to afford two nights for the amount we would have spent on one in Ptown. Yay! Not exactly the huge excitement I'd like to have for my 30th birthday, but this has definitely been a year of muted pleasures and the unplanned.

At some point, we all need to get together and go to Boston Bowl or something for Jennifer's birthday. She has been dying to go big-ball bowling and we need to set something up! (Even though I like little-ball bowling so much better)

p.s. Patti - do you still want to have an October girls birthday get-together somewhere? I want to celebrate your birthday, too. And Brandie's. And Cari's.

From what I've been told Ogunquit is supposed to be a combination of Ptown and Old Orchard Beach. It'll be the tail end of the season, so stuff should still be open, but you won't be battling other tourists for everything. And if worse comes to worse, you can still stroll around on the beach. =)

P and I made a trip to Ogunquit in October the year I graduated from grad school. It was still beautiful and calmly quiet in the after-summer-craziness sort of way.

Where are you staying? Walking on the beach is still very possible (albeit with a sweatshirt or sweater), the lobstah is yummy, and there are many cute little shops in that area to browse through.

I think you'll have a great time. That trip is one of the rare fond memories I still have of P and I being together.

We're staying at The Heritage. It's not the fanciest place there by a longshot, but the rooms were cute and it was really affordable. Besides, why do you really need a fancy room anyway? I wish there was a fireplace, but oh well. :)

I'm sure we will find cute things to do. We won't be there very long (Friday night to Sunday afternoon), so it should be easy.

Hi! I coasted in via friendsfriends (I can't remember how many bounces).

My wife and I love Ogunquit, though we mostly do day trips up there (we used to live in Somerville, but are now out in central Mass). Heritage is fabulous, and we loved the owner. We really loved the hot tub arrangement, too.

We like to rattle around the area -- pretty views, and we're also Victorian house nuts. I highly recommend Gypsy Sweethearts as a nice little place for dinner, if it's still open (I think they close in mid-October). There's also an awesome little bakery on the main grind through town that, last time we were there (2 years ago) was staffed by a number of Very Hot Women who, if they weren't dykes, sure read to me that way.

Thanks for all of the info. That's great that you've had good experiences with The Heritage... especially about the hot tub set-up. It was kind of vague on the website so I didn't know if we should actively plan for using a hot tub. Now I will actively plan.

Thanks for the tips on some local businesses. I will check and see if they are still around and in operation. I hope so! But if not, I'm sure we'll have fun exploring a new place.
