On the way home from Santa Fe today I listened in to some of the tributes they played on NPR, and I think everyone our age learned about Rosa Parks earlier in our academic lives - she was a staple of our original "social studies" classes.
I think she was a lot of people's first (s)heros, simply because she was many of (collective) ours' first experiences with someone's personal history that was such an integral part of our collective history.
Plus, I bet many more public educated adults could tell you what Rosa Parks did on a bus those years ago than could find Iraq on a map...
