Miscellany

We got our first gas bill since we started putting the heat on, and it was $103. This is sheer craziness because last November our bill was about $55. Somehow we used more "therms" or whatever which is highly suspect because, well, I don't remember it being that cold this month (lots of warmer days) but I suppose I could be mistaken. Still, this does not bode well for the winter if the bill is already over $100. Last year, our high bills were $150 in January and February. Now I'm just scared.

I have to boogie down to RI today because someone is coming to look at my dad's truck. I have to get there early enough to make sure it still runs (haven't been down there in a couple of weeks) - wouldn't that be embarrassing?

I got into a great discussion about trans stuff on [livejournal.com profile] folkyboy's podcast yesterday. It was awesome and would have been the coolest thing to hit the internet, but sadly he ran out of room on his iPod and it cut us off somewhere in the middle. This shows: 1) he has way too much country music on his frickin' iPod and 2) we need to have another discussion about transphobia.

The kitten is currently laying on my chest. This is very cute. Usually the kitten is clawing my leg or trying to attack my shoes. Not nearly as cute.

I'm trying to psych myself up for a 3-day workweek but it's hard, because I haven't had much of a weekend (too many chores/obligations) and I know the three days of work will be majorly long. Tomorrow I have a full work day, my annual physical, and then I need to run to babysitting as fast as I can. Hopefully they will not decide to stay out extra late since I will get there extra late. Hopefully.

This journal seems to have little point or direction right now, much like my life. Lame.

Our gas bill jumped $80 from last month to this month. I suspect it's gonna be an expensive winter, but it's still gonna be cheaper than having the 80 year old oil burner and the impossibly drafty original windows with the ropes in them that we had in the apartment.

Ooh, that makes me feel better that it's not just me. Our bill jumped about $70 (usual bill is somewhere around $35 for cooking and dryer) which seems pretty on par with you guys.

I just don't see how it could make such a huge jump when we've been such heatmeisers! We only turn the heat on between 7pm and 11pm, and we set it at 67degrees! No heat at night, no heat when we're not home, and never above 67.

I suspect we should plastic our windows, but they're not drafty. They're replacement windows and I ran my hands around them and no breeze was blowing in. Le sigh.

You had old old windows in your last place? Ouch. That sucks.

p.s. I still want to see your new place. *waits impatiently for an invite*

Our typical thermostat settings are 68 degrees from 6:00 AM to 8:30 AM, 60 degrees from 8:30 AM until 4:00 PM, 68 degrees from 4:00 PM until 11 PM, then 65 degrees overnight. We have dual zone heat, so the basement room is completely separate, and we never turn that one on - it rarely gets too cold because the furnace is in the room right next door and it throws off enough to heat that room.

We'll definitely have to have you guys over! The holidays will probably make scheduling tricky, but we'll work something out :)

Our last year thermostat settings were a lot like that (except it was 66 in the morning when getting ready, 60 when we were at work, 67 when we got home, and 60 at night), but if this past month was already so insane, I'm scared to do that again. Then again, I'm scared for the cats to freeze!

I understand the tricky. Bring it on!

You might want to call up the gas company and see how much the budget bill would be. I just got switched to budget last month and now each month I pay $140 compared to close to $200-300 per month in the winter. Plus at the end of the "year" they credit you for any gas you didn't actually use. Something to look into! :-)

Yeah, I'm considering calling about balanced billing but I really should have done that in the spring... since we didn't pay any higher bills in the spring I don't know what they would do for us. They could balance it out so that we pay more NEXT spring, but we're hoping to be moving and buying a house by then so we'd never get a chance to make up the difference, which would probably sock us with a HUGE bill whenever we moved.

Still, we should look into it.

How did you know??!?!

Seriously, heat is out of control right now. We got our first heating bill of our semi-adult lives last month (ie: when we were still having very pleasant not cold weather), we'd had the thermostat on 60 for assorted cold days, and the bill was $100. Ridiculous. We made a collective decision to keep the heat on 50 ...

Which means it's always really cold, but blankets are more affordable than heat, I guess.

Is this split between the 4 of you? Cause $100 isn't that bad for a HUGE apartment like yours.

Be careful of setting the heat too low... you could freeze the pipes!

hey. *hugs* big ones.
