Thank you all for being my friends. You all know who you are, and can now pat yourselves on the back a little bit, or maybe even get someone else to hug you for me. That would be cool.

This year started out pretty neat (go marriage!) but went downhill pretty effing fast, and I can honestly say that it would have been much worse without friends and distractions. So thank you, friends, for both your friendship and your distractions.

The pumpkin-cranberry breads have finished baking, gifts for the niece and nephews have been ordered, and I'm getting ready to take a shower before we trek out to my aunt and uncle's place for The Big Meal. We're going to stop and pick Tim up on the way and take him along, because no one should be sitting alone in a cold apartment listening to 80 bazillion mp3s when they could be watching someone else's family awkwardly interact. Besides, there will be plenty of food.

It's a bit of a sad day, bereft of Dad's ridiculous banter and his endless torment of my uncle, the Lone Republican in our family. I wonder if everyone will just sit around and talk about something else... or maybe football would be on. That would be different.

I don't really want to have a neverending stream of holidays without my Dad. We were all just getting started. In two weeks, he would have been turning 58. Only 58. I'm already more than halfway there.

<3 I honestly can't imagine what you're going through, but I love you and hope you're managaging ok. This is my mom's first set of holidays without her dad too, and I feel totally helpless to try to comfort either of you.

I don't know that I need a lot of comforting. I mean, it's not like I don't have a nice set of other family members that I got to see who are all very lovely. It's just interesting how things can be so different with one person missing, even though said one person wasn't running the show or whatever. It actually would have been completely okay if I hadn't ended up the family mockery.

Kind of makes me want to skip the group festivities for a while.
