Major thanks to [livejournal.com profile] scirocco and [livejournal.com profile] oxlahun for all of their incredibly hard work today!

My [livejournal.com profile] smurfbrother is in town (as of yesterday) and rented yet another dumpster, this time to rid the house of some old, broken furniture, most of the contents of the basement, and all of the junk Jen and I have bagged up around the house for the past couple of months. It's kind of sad that two months of work can take an hour or so to haul away, but I take some satisfaction in our quick job time. I know that it would have taken eons to haul out had we not bagged it all and placed it in a centralized location near the front door. After all, when the auction folks went through and took what they wanted, they just kind of... left whatever they didn't, wherever they felt like leaving it. So it was a project.

My uncle and cousin came by as well, ostensibly to help but Uncle Joe usually uses these opportunities for junk picking and nostalgia, and today was no different. Still, he walked out with three cigar boxes full of lighters and all of the train stuff that the auction folks didn't take. Thanks, Uncle Joe! Wiley ended up taking the plasma ball thinger for Hannah which is cool... but I really wanted to smash it. It would have been so tinkly. Aah well. No destruction today.

There's still some stuff in the house, which is positively AMAZING for a project that has now involved 10 months and at least three dumpsters. There is some furniture that needs to be donated somewhere, some furniture that I am trying to sell on craigslist, some furniture that needs to come to my house someday, and a whoooole lotta housewares that need to go to Goodwill or something. But all of the housewares, at least, are also boxed/bagged and in a centralized location for easy removal.

I suppose the next thing we'll end up doing is cleaning the apartment - vacuuming floors, pulling nails out of walls. The basement should probably be swept as well. Yuck.

Someday, there will be a time when I am not a slave to this house.

i don't suppose there are any wooden bureaus in there? i'm probably going to need to buy one to put *more* clothes in.

it must be a relief to be almost finished. from what i've read, cleaning out that house was an incredibly large job.

There is one wooden bureau (the rest were from when we were kids, and were totally trashed). It has a mirror attached, but it can be removed if you didn't want it. it was my grandmother's, so it's a little on the baroque side, but not too bad. It's made it's way through my family - my brother took it to college and brought it back, then I took it to Boston, then Maine, then Ohio... where I gave the bedroom set to my ex-husband. I guess I never took that particular bureau to Maine. I wonder how it got back home. Weird. All I know is, it's there, and you can totally have it if you have a truck to put it in!

Do you need one of those television armoires? We have one that's quite fancy. Also a little toy box that you could totally have. Would you like a fake fur coat? A statue of Ronald Reagan? Oh wait, we gave that to my uncle.

Oh, honey, when it comes to my father and his assortment of stuff, I am ALWAYS serious.

There must be some sort of Red Cross Hurricane organization that would come to your house and happily gobble up all those housewares and things...

Did you ever come across my doll?

I'm fairly sure the doll is somewhere in the 5-6 boxes in my apartment that we pulled from the house. I haven't gone through them (I should), because I'm so sick of going through stuff at THAT house that I have no energy to go through stuff in my own house. At this rate, I'll probably find it whenever we move out of here and I start purging stuff. Yuck.

If I find it sooner, I will totally let you know. I promise!

And yeah, my grandmother usually gives her housewares to the Big Sisters, because I guess they help women move into their first apartments or whatever. So we can probably get rid of it through them, too.

damnit! i could totally use a ronald reagan statue. it could go with the REAGAN/BUSH '84 bumper sticker i have in my computer drawer...

when are you coming down to RI next? we need to get together for coffee. if you need someone to cart the furniture away, that's cool- but if you were looking to sell it, i'd be willing to pay too- let me know.

There is some furniture that I am trying to sell (my dad's cherry bedroom set, and maybe the armoire), but the dresser was just going to get given away. We actually thought about leaving it on the sidewalk... so if you want it, it's totally yours.

I think we'll be in town next Sunday to chill with my grandparents a little bit. They're out of town this weekend, and we'll be in New Orleans soon, so I should go see them before the guilt begins!

So if you're around next Sunday, let me know. Otherwise, beginning of April we'll be back from Nola. Who knows? Maybe we'll get together sometime when we're BOTH knocked up!

You can 'get rid of it' pretty much anywhere. I was thinking of some organization that would come pick it all up for you and haul it off so you don't have to. ;P

Well yeah - my grandmother says the Big Sisters come to her house to get stuff. Hopefully they'll come to my dad's, too.
