I just hate talking on the phone.

So I called the guy who hit me and told him there was more damage than I thought, and asked if he wanted to come see. He said no, he hit me, he didn't need to see. He said he would call his insurance company and file, and I said I would, too. He gave me more of his info (address, insurance policy #, license plate) and I called the insurance company.

Of course they asked if I had a police report and I said no, and they gave me a hassle about that. But I filed it and told them he hit me and all of that. They said that with no police report, they weren't sure about fault - that ticked me off because umm, I was totally stopped and all my damage is on the rear bumper. But whatever.

So I also found out that we apparently have rental car coverage on the Focus but not the Matrix. WTF? All I can imagine is that it was a mix-up but that could end up biting me in the ass if the repairs take a while. Grumble. And that apparently Jen is the primary policy holder so they wrote the claim as "owner not in vehicle." That kind of made me feel like a 16-year-old on Daddy's insurance.

Now I guess we just see what happens. Police won't issue a report because (duh) they weren't there. So take that, insurance phone answerer guy!

That's so dumb - they shouldn't be hassling you about the police report (not that that makes any difference since they already have). But insurance companies have whole teams of people whose only job is to inspect damage and figure things out. I once rear-ended someone, who rear-ended someone (oh it was such fun) and we all filed with insurance, without a police report, and we all agreed on what had happened. The insurance company sent someone to look at my car and take photos of the practically non-existant damage to my front bumper and la de da.

So, anyway, a pox on the person who hassled you xxx

Yeah, they sent an appraiser to inspect the damage so I don't know what the big deal is. But whatever. I don't even care what the insurance company says anymore - I just want to let it all play itself out.

Ugh.

What the name of the insurance companies? I'm just curious because there are several that will go out of their way to avoid paying a claim.

Stay on them.

The dude that hit me had Met Life. They seem to be on top of it. They called me today to take a statement and explained all of their payment policies - so I guess they're planning to pay. :)

[identity profile] luloubelle.livejournal.com 2007-02-14 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Met Life is a good company. And you can't really argue a rear-end collision, you know? I mean, he hit you. They have to pay.

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2007-02-16 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I hope you're right!

[identity profile] prettyvacantone.livejournal.com 2007-02-10 04:19 pm (UTC)(link)
The insurance people suck, but the very good news is that the guy who hit you was willing to admit his mistake and didn't give you a hard time about wanting to get the damage repaired. There's hope for this world after all!

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2007-02-13 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, he seemed like a pretty nice guy. Either that or he has a lot of money, I don't know! :)

(Anonymous) 2007-02-10 05:12 pm (UTC)(link)
why don't you just get an estimate and see if the guy would rather pay that then the deductible, and NOT turn it in?

Yeah, that's what I wanted to offer him... but in the end he said he wanted to go through insurance.

I had this whole long post to write and then I got embarrassed and deleted it, so I'll just say good luck and you're in my thoughts.

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2007-02-13 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
What happened? Why did you get embarrassed?

[identity profile] yerbrainondrugs.livejournal.com 2007-02-10 05:53 pm (UTC)(link)
For what it's worth, I've had to deal with the insurance company several times about car accidents and I've had much better luck. Only once did I even have a police report and they never hassled me when I didn't have one. They would need to send an inspector but they usually didn't need to bother me at all and would just swing by when the car was parked in front of the house. When I spoke with them on the phone they seemed more concerned about if anyone was hurt and helping me out than hassling me for what I did or didn't do properly.

You might want to consider switching insurance; it sounds liek yours kinda sucks if they're giving you that much hassle.

The problem is that in MA we don't have a lot of insurance company options. We have weird insurance laws that state that all of the companies have to charge the same rates, so lots of the low-cost insurance companies (Geico, Allstate, etc.) don't want to touch us with a 10' pole. So we have a couple of companies and there is a /little/ flexibility on rates (depending on policies) and this one was the cheapest. They've actually always been good about handling claims in the past but they've always been for things like vandalism where we DID get a police report.

Maybe the weekend coverage guy was having a bad day. Who knows? :)

Dude, because you're not at fault, regardless of car rental coverage, you're entitled to a ride comparable to the one that was hit while it's being repaired -- if it's drivable, then drive it; but while it's being repaired, the other guy's insurance company should (and WILL) pay for a car for you to rent while yours gets fixed.

Who am I? Ex-car rental manager. If you have any questions about the insurance or renting, lemme know.

In other news, maybe we can get you an exorcism for Memorial Day or something; remove this blah that seems to be following you guys around...

Hope all is well otherwise...

Jeff

The other guy's insurance company called me to talk about payments and stuff, and they said they could direct-pay any of the major car rental places if I need a car rental. So hopefully that will all work out. :)

[identity profile] volumeat11.livejournal.com 2007-02-14 03:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Good. Best of luck with that, and lemme know if you have any questions.

And it was great to see you and Jen this past weekend -- albeit briefly. I was hoping you'd still be there when we got back...but then we got back an hour AFTER when we were supposed to be back...so I don't blame you for not staying -- I don't blame any of the chicks for leaving, actually...

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2007-02-21 04:50 pm (UTC)(link)
We had to get up to Stoughton to go to IKEA before heading home. So we actually stayed a little longer than we'd intended to and we're sad to have missed you. I'm sure things are CRAZY for you guys right around now, so just know we're thinking of you.

Rediculous Ins. Co!

(Anonymous) 2007-02-12 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
I had a situation like that once and we didn't file a police report..but the ins. company had someone come and inspect each vehicle, and from the damage could tell who was at fault..there is no reason why yours can't do that. I hate insurance companies! Almost as much as I hate gyms that don't record cancelled memberships! Hope it works out for you! good luck!

Yeah, I don't know what the big deal is because they sent an appraiser and stuff. Since all of my damage is to the back bumper I don't see HOW there could be any question of fault. I'm sure there isn't. I will just wait and see. :)
