WTF?

Ugh.

Punk would NOT sleep last night.

No, scratch that, she slept FANTASTICALLY in the early part of the night, drifting seamlessly into sleep at 6:30pm and sleeping like a rock with no necessary resettlings, and then woke up at 11:15 to eat. I fed her, she had a bit of a rough time getting settled back down but was back in bed a few minutes before midnight and I thought all was well. Lately she's needed some resettling around 3 or 4am, so I figured Jen could cover that and I went to bed.

Punk woke up randomly at 12:30am and was Up. Like "ready to play" up. She was talking, moving everywhere (in her swaddle), etc. I had her in the rocker forEVER until she fell asleep, put her in the crib - she woke up. Picked her back up, back in the rocker for longer, put her back in - she woke up. Ad nauseum.

After an hour, I told Jen she had to try because I hadn't gotten to sleep yet and it was 1:30am. So she went but Punk has sort of decided I am her Best Sleep Friend right now and she just kept whining and straining and crying, so I went back out there. She fell asleep in my arms in the rocker. It was a repeat of the previous hour: put her in the crib - wake up. I tried to leave and she just started flailing all over the place, so I picked her up again. I tried to bring her into bed with me, but she just turned that into Party Time.

By now it is somewhere near 2:30 and I am ready to shoot myself. I recruit Jen to try again and I shut off the monitor and have her shut the door. I put the pillow and blanket over my head. But I can still hear the screaming. The screaming. The screaming. I go back and get her again, she sleeps in my arms some more, and finally I tell Jen to get her 2oz of milk. (No, she wasn't hungry, but umm, whatever.)

She fell asleep at 3:30 and Jen came back to bed and promptly fell asleep. I think I fell asleep around 4.

Punk woke up at 5, whining. I went in, rocked, got her back into the crib around 5:40. She woke up at 6:15 when Jen's alarm went off.

She has been a miserable, overtired mess ever since.
ME TOO.

Does she usually fall asleep so early in the evening?

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2008-01-09 04:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes.

Well, she usually falls asleep anywhere between 6:30 and 7:30, usually right around 7. So she was a wee bit early but nothing monumental. She used to go to bed around 7:30-8 until the time change.

Bleh.

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2008-01-09 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I know! Personally I would love her to be an 8 to 8 girl, but she has Other Plans.

I am hoping that when we "Spring Ahead," she will move back into the 7s.

[identity profile] fleur.livejournal.com 2008-01-09 04:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh! The fact that its dark by 5:30 probably isn't helping!!

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2008-01-09 04:47 pm (UTC)(link)
You are not kidding. It is pitch black here by 5. She can take a 2 hour nap until 4:30pm and STILL start rubbing her eyes by 5:30 or 6. Effing "Fall Back" nonsense.

[identity profile] fleur.livejournal.com 2008-01-09 04:53 pm (UTC)(link)
It is JUST NOW creeping back out of the pitch black by 5 pm scenario. I don't need to spot the constellations on my way to a 5:10 bus, thanks though. BLEH.

[identity profile] evewasframed.livejournal.com 2008-01-09 07:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha ha!

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2008-01-09 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's just WRONG.

When I was living in northern Maine for a while (biggest. mistake. ever.), it got dark around 4pm in the dead of winter. I got out of work at 4:30 and it was pitch black. That is just all kinds of wrong.

[identity profile] lorac.livejournal.com 2008-01-09 04:23 pm (UTC)(link)
DUDE. Katie was totally like that last night too! There must be something in the baby air. I was so psyched that she had taken such a good nap yesterday with no resettlings and then BAM - up and down all night. ARGH. And I have a bunch of doctors appointments today so she's hanging with my mom and I know she won't nap for her and it is going to be all bad at our house tonight.

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2008-01-09 04:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh, that's the worst - when you KNOW it's going to be bad. Like, preemptively bad. I feel bad for you in advance.

Yesterday wasn't a great nap day up in here but it wasn't terrible. Her afternoon nap was briefer than usual because we were walking around in the nice weather (she will. not. nap. in. slings.) but I don't know how that became Psycho Baby Qu'est-ce que C'est! Argh!

I hope that somehow the Universe takes pity on us and we both end up with sleeping children tonight. Heck, I'd much rather she have her frequent wake-ups BEFORE 12 and then sleep like a champ after. You'd think I could just REASON with her! ;)

p.s. I am busting into town on Friday, pretty much to have lunch with work peeps and get them off my back about how I don't take the baby to them, but I would love to see you after for a little bit if you think you might be around. It would probably be a drive-by but I miss you!!!

[identity profile] lorac.livejournal.com 2008-01-09 04:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I should be around! Give me a call when you're done with lunch and we'll figure something out. :)

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2008-01-09 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I need to make sure I have your phone number. I do, right?

[identity profile] msredkitty.livejournal.com 2008-01-09 04:47 pm (UTC)(link)
those nights suuuuuck. sorry.

but, they won't happen forever. just wait until they are replaced by the random nightmares about spiders and peter pan. :)

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2008-01-09 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, Peter Pan is kind of scary! :)

[identity profile] mayna.livejournal.com 2008-01-09 04:52 pm (UTC)(link)
What happens if you lay her on her tummy in the crib and just stand there and pat her back while she cries? So she goes to sleep in the crib and not in your arms. I think it's easier to do that before they can stand up in the crib. It's not perfect, but Vivi's not been too bad with going to sleep in the pack n play if I do it that way (if she falls asleeep in my arms, she has to be really tired to stay asleep when I put her down).

If she just wants to play, then I leave the room until she's done playing and starting to get upset, then I go in and soothe her to sleep by patting her back. Sometimes she'll go to sleep on her own without me soothing her (she goes from playing, to going to sleep without crying!) which I find oddball since my other 2 would never do that!

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2008-01-09 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
She doesn't like to lay on her tummy. She likes to do pushups on her tummy and get her butt up and push herself around, but she does not like to LAY on her tummy. And if she is tired, too tired to do all of the playing on her tummy, she just gets PISSED OFF. Like, really really pissed off, rubbing her face into the mattress and howling and pushing up and falling down... she is really and truly a back sleeper (like her mama). I personally would think it was great if she slept on her tummy but she is not having any of it.

Well, she wanted to play... with ME. She doesn't really self-entertain at all. And she was quite insistent on my holding her.

[identity profile] lelumama.livejournal.com 2008-01-09 05:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Caiti got up at 2:30am last night. She dozed off and on after that in my bed, but mostly she was ripping out my hair, sticking her fingers up my nose and trying to nurse (I've 86'd the night time nursing and it's not working).

I want to die. I'm exhausted. Mark is out of town and usually he is up with her from 6:00 to 7:30am so I can sleep.

I'm feeling you today.

I gave Caiti her cup at 11pm last night and she fell back asleep, surprisingly. She's always been a tummy sleeper, so usually I can pat her back down. I love tummy sleeping.

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2008-01-09 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh. I'm sorry. :( Jen usually gets up with Punk in the mornings too (they eat breakfast together) and while I can't sleep (DA DA DA DA *BANG BANG BANG* DA DA YA YA), it's nice to lay there.

I hope tonight is a better night for everyone. I'm sorry about the night nursing. :(

[identity profile] juju-bug.livejournal.com 2008-01-09 05:25 pm (UTC)(link)
oh, I hope your day goes more smoothly today.
My daughter is turning 6months on the 21st, and she had a terrible nap day yesterday. SO out of whack that I had to cancel a doctor's appt. that I had scheduled for myself... Her night time sleep wasn't that bad, she woke up twice to eat - but she was loud and talkative throughout the entire night, and I sleep on a futon in her room, so she totally kept me up all night. My neck is all stiff from stress. I do think she's teething though - is it possible your little Punk is teething too? either that, or there is definitely something going on with the baby cosmos! lol
oh crap - I think I just jynx'd myself - daughter went down for a nap 20 minutes ago, and she's already waking up?! Gah!
*sigh*
*drags feet to nursery*

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2008-01-09 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Today has been All About The Naps. She usually takes two short morning naps and a longer afternoon nap. She was still tired after Morning Nap #1, so I got her to extend Morning Nap #2. Now she is enjoying her afternoon nap. I do hope this sets her up for a good night.

It's possible that she's teething (she's been a drool machine for over a month now) but she wasn't UPSET throughout the night last night, she would just wake up when I put her down. She didn't seem to be in pain or sad or anything. Weird.

Good luck tonight!

[identity profile] juju-bug.livejournal.com 2008-01-09 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! I'll need it... My Rio has never been a good sleeper - infact that has been the biggest challenge she's had (besides breastfeeding) so far. I think she took after dad and she's a light/sensitive sleeper...(you can walk by her during a nap and your ankle will crack and her eyes will pop open!)
She had a decent morning nap today - then I had the bright idea of taking her to the bookstore - big mistake - she hates bookstores... maybe too much visual stimuli? I dunno - but I had her in my baby bjorn and she started to squeal in the aisles - so I had to grab some random things I wanted and skeet skeet out of there. lol. I guess her teething makes her crabby anywhere she goes...
I've been doing some searches online about baby sleep - and I see a lot of babies around 6 months having some similar wide awake at night situations - interesting... must research more... Hope you and yours have a restful sleep tonight! (and baby Punk too! - sleep baby, sleep!) :)

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2008-01-10 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
When Punk is in a deep sleep, nothing will wake her. Once she even slept through the smoke alarm! (Stupid oven...) But when she is just falling asleep, it's the same as Rio - she can hear your toe crack or the floorboard creak, so I have to do this weird dance out of her bedroom and avoid the really creaky parts. Oh, the things we do for our kids.

She has been sleeping like a log for the last 2 hours... I am so nervous because last night started so well, too.

I have also heard that kids can get sleep problems at 6 months. I wonder if it's a developmental thing or if they're just more aware or something...

[identity profile] juju-bug.livejournal.com 2008-01-10 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
ugh! I am nervous for you too! I"m hoping she gets some restful sleep tonight so you guys can recoup. *crosses fingers*

developmental thing = yes that sounds totally possible! let us know if you notice any new skillz after this passes?

Good night :)

*hugs*

[identity profile] lelumama.livejournal.com 2008-01-10 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I bought some Hylands teething tablets so I'm hoping that they work. Caiti is getting in a baby molar and I think her canines are finally coming in.

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2008-01-10 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
I have some of those but I haven't had to use them yet. You'll have to tell me how it goes. :)

[identity profile] lelumama.livejournal.com 2008-01-10 01:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, she slept from 7pm until 4:00am. One short wakeup at 10pm and then I brought her to bed with me at her next wakeup at 2.

Wahhhhhhhhhhhh...I want sleep.

[identity profile] lelumama.livejournal.com 2008-01-10 01:27 pm (UTC)(link)
and that was with tablets at 6:30 and again at 10. duh.

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2008-01-10 01:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Punk fell asleep around 7 and slept like a log until 11. She woke up and was doing her "I'll sleep until you put me down" thing, so Jen fed her and she went back to sleep. I got up with her at 4 but it only took about 15 minutes to get her back into bed. She got up for the morning at (ugh) 5:50. Jen says she got up with her sometime in there but I don't know when.

She is currently taking the shittiest nap ever. Argh!

[identity profile] sassywoman.livejournal.com 2008-01-09 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you think little August is working on some teeth??

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2008-01-09 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Anything is possible, but she wasn't UPSET last night, just awake. I wonder if it's some sort of developmental thing, like she's about to do something major.

[identity profile] folkyboy.livejournal.com 2008-01-09 06:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I tried to leave and she just started flailing all over the place

she was screaming MOMMY DON'T ABANDON ME! in baby speak ;)

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2008-01-09 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
That's right! MEAN MAMA DON'T GO INTO THE OTHER ROOOOOOOOOM!

[identity profile] tea-soaked.livejournal.com 2008-01-09 06:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Poor little Punk... poor mama too. Those nights are hard! I feel for you.

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2008-01-09 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I just hope tonight is better. I don't think I can handle two in a row. I am so envious of those people who can just take the baby into the bed with them and pop a boob in her mouth. I would love to be one of those people.

[identity profile] skatured.livejournal.com 2008-01-09 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I would love to be one of those people too!

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2008-01-10 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
Oh my god I could just EAT your baby!

[identity profile] tea-soaked.livejournal.com 2008-01-09 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I would love to be one of those people too...

I hope tonight is better for you - maybe it's developmental...?

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2008-01-10 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
I really think it is. She was just so... awake last night. Not in pain, not uncomfortable, just awake.

[identity profile] lelumama.livejournal.com 2008-01-10 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Ha. It doesn't always work. Trust me on this.

Oh, how I ache for those days.

I can't wait until our kids sleep through the night.

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2008-01-10 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
You'll (hopefully) get there sooner than I will! :)

[identity profile] skatured.livejournal.com 2008-01-09 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Gah that sounds like my night. :( Thankfully she has been sleeping well today so far, so I am hoping that tonight is a bit better. Hopefully she will have tired herself out for an early night tonight, right?

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2008-01-10 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
I hope so! I hope we all get good sleep tonight. :)

[identity profile] lynncc01.livejournal.com 2008-01-10 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
I am totally right there with you Jude. Misery loves company! I will think of you and Gus tonight as I am rocking (back) to sleep a screaming, fussy baby...

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2008-01-10 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
We should all text each other all night and give sleep updates. :)

[identity profile] lynncc01.livejournal.com 2008-01-10 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
lol too bad we are 3 hours different, and i don't have texting on my phone, or I just might say- hells yeh, lets DO IT!

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2008-01-10 01:34 pm (UTC)(link)
You are such a party pooper, Lynn. :)

xoxo

[identity profile] shellipsm.livejournal.com 2008-01-11 05:05 pm (UTC)(link)
stupid growth spurts!

She's old enough to do a bit of sleep training, if you are into that sort of thing (we are, but no judgements if you're not!)

If not? Well, just try to keep her up a bit more during the day and see if that helps.

And if not? Just wait a week, because it will all change. ;)

[identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com 2008-01-12 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm banking on the "wait a week" thing... here's hoping it will be a week or less, because umm, I'm getting tired! :)

Right now I'm not the biggest fan of sleep training. I could change my tune, I'm sure, but Punk is super-sensitive and intense, and is a MAJOR escalator, and I really don't know that those sorts of tactics would work for her. She (so far) doesn't seem to be a "blow off a little steam and then relax" kind of girl. Heck, she's not a "relax" kind of girl at all, which is really starting to freak me out a little bit.

But yeah, I hope that when her brain stops exploding she'll go back to waking up once in the middle of the night for a bottle. Those were some good weeks. :)
