End of the rope

Someone I know online is fond of saying, "When you're at the end of your rope, you really are," which I have always taken to mean that when you think you absolutely cannot go any lower, not even a little tiny bit, you're as low as you can go and it won't get any worse.

I really hope both she and I are right about this.
