Fin Update:
Yesterday I put some Delicious Canned Food on our deck table and this morning, Fin was totally chowing down on it. I thought maybe I would open the door and see if he would come in, but he ran away as soon as he heard me turn the lock. DRAT! I guess we'll just be leaving food outside.

Job Update:
There aren't many staff members, which means there aren't a lot of people to get into trouble with. That is very very sad. However, they need to start billing pronto and I can pretty much take cases right now, so they like me a lot. Heh. And I confirmed that I will get the big money I wanted ($6k more than my last job) for a four-day work week. Nice.

Punk Update:
She has this AWFUL diaper rash that seems to get worse when she is at child care. This evening it was red and puffy and just so bad. I'm wondering if she is sensitive to the disposable wipes (we use cloth wipes at home). I'm going to send cloth wipes to child care and see what happens, and Jen is taking her to walk-in hour at the pediatrician. Also, she has had horrible poop for the last couple of days... I think maybe from the increase in solid finger foods? Or because we started yogurt and cheese? Either way, we have some experimenting to do.

We got Nystatin because it's a yeast infection. Yuck!

SO what is it about the maalox that works? My kid doesn't get many diaper rashes (thank you, cloth diapers!) and this one is yeast so it's a non-issue, but it's very curious to me.

Maalox calms the acid reaction in the poop and pee, and calms the skin. Aquaphor provides a physical barrier to the moisture. So together they break down the redness and swelling and make the diaper rash go away. (unless of course it's yeasty)

That's really interesting, thanks! That makes a lot of sense. I will have to keep that in mind if she ever gets a nasty diaper rash (not yeast).

You might want to try not leaving food out for a night - odds are he'll still come looking for the food you've been leaving, and if he's hungry he might be foolish enough to wait around to ask for it.

You might also want to ask the daycare to be super vigilant about changes for the next little bit until she clears up (not that I think they're not careful, but an extra dose of care might be a good thing.)

I think I'm going to leave him outside, at least for now. I think if I did bring him inside, he would be miserable and I don't want to deal with it. No matter how bad that makes me.

Her rash was from yeast, so we have antifungal stuff now. Whee!

could the diaper rash be an allergic response to some new food?

For wipes, we've had great luck using (don't laugh, I know it sounds slightly ghetto) Viva paper towels (the pick-a-size are perfect) and plain water - it's what they suggested in the NICU, and it's really worked well... then a little cream or ointment when needed... perhaps your daycare would do that, if the cloth option isn't to their liking? The Viva are very strong and cloth-like, but still disposable, and it turns out the plain water does a great job without any irritating chemicals... (okay, I will stop sounding like some freaky ad from mothering.com or something now!)

Anyway, hope your lo's rash clears up, and congrats on the great job situation! :)

That's cool. She was cool with the cloth wipes but it's also a yeast rash so it's a non-issue I guess. Rash is yucky!

I'm glad the cat is at least okay!

I hope you figure out what the cause of the diaper rash is -- I bet it's the new food....uh maybe.

Have you thought about getting a live trap to set out for Fin? You could probably borrow one from a local shelter, or Crazy Cat Lady. You could leave it on the porch with the Coveted Wet Food inside and then you'd have him.
even though he seems to be enjoying his escapades, personally I'd be worried about him getting hit by a car or something and I wouldn't ever forgive myself.
You do have to check the trap pretty often, even overnight, so you don't leave him in there to get harrassed by other animals.

I might come clean as a Bad Cat Mom now, but I don't think I'm going to try to bring him in. And yes, I know he could get hit by a car or eaten by a coyote but if he is SO set on being out there, he is going to be /miserable/ in the house. And he's already crazy and active, always knocking things over and breaking things, I can't even imagine what it would be like if he was desperate to go outside.

I may reevaluate in a little bit but honestly right now I've ONLY seen him when we have food out there so it's not like he's hanging around being lonely.

Yay on the $$, and hugs for you re: Fin and Punk.

You know I loves me some diaper talk and diaper troubleshooting! I think sending cloth wipes is a great idea, as is the theorizing on food. However, other questions occur to me: Is she wearing the same kind of dipes at daycare that she is at home? What are they? Are they changing her as frequently as you do? Inquiring minds want to know. :)

I send diapers to day care so she definitely uses the same ones. She probably changes them more often than I do, heh. She leaves me notes about when she changed the diapers and it's pretty similar to what I do. She's really great about it.

Apparently it's a yeast rash. We have special stuff now. Whee.

The diaper rash could be yeast, D used to get those all the time. Not fun :/

Yep, we took her to the pedi and it was yeast. :( Now we have cream for it. I hope it goes away soon, it really got worse overnight and now is in the creases of her legs and everything. Yuck!

That sucks, sorry. It's so hard to get rid of too. With Devin my doctor told me at every diaper change to make sure to wipe well, dry off completely with a hair dryer, put on a thick layer of cream and then cover it with Desitin. Wow, it was awful and it took weeks to go away! Make sure to tell the day care they need to change any wet/poopy diapers ASAP. The last doc I went to said you can just buy OTC yeast stuff for it.

queen of clearing up diaper rash!

Hey! Sorry to hear about Fin and Punk's diaper rash. My kid used to get it SO bad all the time. Triple paste is your friend. It's amazing. If the triple paste doesn't work, then it's probably yeast based. In that case, use lotrimin on the rash. It's the same thing that the doc will prescribe.

The ONLY thing that works for either of our kids' diaper rash is A&D ointment.
