I just made a tabouleh salad from scratch for a little party at the home of one of my new coworkers. I hope it is good. It smells good. I love tabouleh salad. So does Punk. Good kid.

Also, I just want to state for the record that I /did/ call and have a 'chat' with the physical therapist, and during the course of the conversation she /did/ tell me that typically developing children can walk as late as 16 months. Heh. Can I call it or what?

Delay or not, she has neuromuscular concerns, lady, and you're stuck with us.

NOOOOOT that I am dismissing your neuromuscular concerns, because those have obviously been with you for a long time and extend far beyond her not-walking!!!! But Lillian didn't walk until 15 months, and she's completely fine. In fact, she followed some similar timing to Punk, pulling herself up early and walking late.

Obviously you know your own kid a lot better than a stranger on the internet! I'm just giving a data point here. Your background gives you all the information you need to advocate for Punk effectively, and she's so lucky to have you as a mama.

Oh totally. As far as the cruising/walking goes, she's not delayed. It's true. But she still ends up with a lot to work on because of the high tone and motor planning issues, and right now I'm pretty much doing it all myself. Which is cool because I'm her kid, but umm, she's also entitled to services for that.

Where she IS getting stuck is with anything that involves both motor planning AND flexibility - it's like she can compensate for one or the other, but not both. So she can stand, but can't get back down, no matter how much we show her. She's just stuck. And cruising is starting to happen, but it's slow going because she has a hard time weight-shifting and moving her legs like that.

Yeah. Interestingly, Lillian also had issues in her very early infancy because of ridiculously strong back muscles - she could hold her head up when she came out of the womb, but her abdominal muscles were so much weaker that she spent a lot of her first six months with her head wonked back at a 90-degree angle or more. We ended up doing a lot of things with putting her in a Bumbo seat on the coffee table and then doing interesting things way down below her so that she had to curl forward to see them, and that fixed it, but now I'm wondering if she has some issues similar in scope although obviously not in degree.

My aunt didn't walk until she was 17 months old.

What that means to me:

Oh, thanks Auntie for the GENES THAT MAKE MY KID DELAYED.

;)

PT 4-EVA. We need a secret handshake and a tattoo.

Ha ha ha ha!

I was a late walker too, but only because my mom dropped me and broke my leg right when I was going to start learning to walk. Oops.

THANK YOU, MOM.

Word on the tattoo.

Can you request a new therapist or are you stuck with her?

I am waiting to see if she resolves the things we talked about on the phone yesterday, otherwise I think I will simply go to another program.

Ava has to go to early intervention because she doesnt put weight on her legs or sit up on her own at 8 months. Any advice?

Hrm. Advice.

1. The entire Early Intervention process is supposed to be ENTIRELY family driven. Don't let them set goals for your kid or suggest services (or lack thereof) that you are not cool with. This is YOUR kid and YOUR EI experience. If they act otherwise, they're breaking the law. :)

2. EI is super fun and works with your kid in a way that they usually don't particularly know they're working. The people are (usually) extremely nice and love kids and get really attached to all of the cute babies.

3. Has the pedi ever commented on her muscle tone? I've never met Ava but I wonder if she's a little low tone ("floppy") if she's having trouble with weight bearing and stuff.

4. Don't think that because Ava needs some help now that she will be behind forever. Most kids catch up. :)

5. If you ever want to know the law of EI, I can totally hook you up.
