Double bummer

Punk got sent home from day care this afternoon with a fever. She doesn't have a cold or anything, but the temp was higher than you would expect for teething (and she already has 8 teeth, geeze!). She can't go to day care tomorrow (because she has to be fever-free for 24 hours) so Jen has to take the day off. Good times, good times. I wish I could be home with my sick Punker. :(

At work today, one of the kiddos that I have autism spectrum type concerns about was doing spectrum-y things and when I casually made inquiries about them to his mom, she mentioned that her older child (whom I have never met) is on the spectrum.

Ouch.

With this particular kid? There's a pretty significant lack of eye contact which isn't in and of itself a deal breaker, but he also really doesn't interact with ME when he wants help, he kind of just interacts with whatever body part will help him. Like, he wanted me to open something for him so he put it in my hand. And then when he wanted it open again and I didn't have my hand out, he picked up my hand, turned it so that it was palm up, and then put the toy in my hand... all without looking at me at all.

He has some other stuff too, but the "using me as a tool" bit is what got me chatty with his mom.

Hey, whenever they call you on your kid with a fever to send her home from day care, ask exactly what her temp is and how they took it. If they tell you ANYTHING under 100.4, it's not actually a fever and if they tell you they took it by putting the thermometer under her arm, it's also useless.

Tympanic and rectal temperatures are the best way to determine a fever. If they call you and say she has a fever of 99 and we checked it under her arm, send them to this website.

It drives me crazy that daycares send kids home so quickly for an inaccurate reading on a kid that doesn't even qualify as a fever.

Oh yeah, our day care person is really awesome. This was something like 101.5 under the arm (so potentially 102 rectal). It was indeed in the high 101s when Jen took it rectally when she got home. She actually told Jen the temp on the phone, sent me an e-mail, and said she was really surprised it was so high when she had been fine (if a little cranky) most of the morning.

She ended up having an ear infection. Again. Augh.
