One nap?

Somebody wouldn't take a nap this morning. Someone named Punk. She got up a little later than normal thanks to an ounce of milk that she left in her wee hours of morning bottle - I slipped it to her at 6:30 and she fell back asleep for another 40 minutes or so. Awesome. But she was rubbing her eyes and yawning and clearly tired for her normal naptime of 9ish and I set about to put her to bed. After an hour of trying everything - swaddling, no swaddling, rocking, no rocking, paci, no paci, letting her jabber in the crib until it turned to screaming and "mum mum mum mum" - I got her back up and said, "Okay, let's go play." And she did, she totally held it together until lunch (11:30) and proceeded to get a little crabby when I was cleaning up lunch but nothing too major.

And she just went down for a nap in approximately 8 seconds. I have hopes that she will sleep a long time to make up for the lack of morning nap, but I am not putting any stock in those hopes because I will undoubtedly be shot down in an hour when she is awake and screaming because she has missed me.

Perhaps I should make some lunch while I have this blissful break. I was counting on that morning nap, you know? Fried.

p.s. Thank you for all of the suggestions for the child care thing. I'm a little leery of moving Punk to a center for last minute child care for a couple of reasons (1. she's a really routine-oriented kid and I wouldn't want to stress her out, and 2. she's not fully vaccinated) although I would consider the substitute-nanny route ([livejournal.com profile] rexlezard especially, seeing as he knows Punk and is a whiz with kids). We'll probably end up just taking the days off because I am Anal Psycho Mom... I already cleared it with my boss who said I could borrow against time off I don't have yet or take it unpaid, whichever I'd prefer. So maybe I will take a couple of days especially since August 12 is Punk's neurologist appt and I was going to be there anyway. Who knows?

okay hi are we living in the same house or do we have the same kid because it sounds very much like the nap situation over here... i am dreading naptime and bedtime so much lately... unpredictable and cranky...

We have been trying to drop the morning nap for some time now but somebody insists on waking up for the day between 5:30-6AM about 90% of the time so she is wiped by 10AM. If I push her to take a nap until after lunch she sleeps maybe 90 minutes tops and that is not enough for one day IMO. Pulling hair out here ...

Hmmm maybe it's about time that she's moving to one nap? If she keeps it up, you might want to try skipping morning nap and putting her down around 1pm for a longer nap.

Hi, longtime reader, first-time poster...

I'm also struggling with the napping thing with my 4.5 month old. (Although he's magically sleeping now.) No problem at night: he goes down on the script and sleeps at least five hours and the other night (after NO naps all day) eight solid!

But missing that morning nap? Fried for both of us. What can be done?

My beebs took two really nice naps for quite a while, then all of a sudden, the second nap was just a gab fest for them. They bounced up and down and babbled away until they got upset and I had to go get them. I took this as my cue that they were ready for one nap. It took about 2 weeks to really work...growing pains and all, and the last hour before the nap is sometimes rough, but it works really well for us. I find that if I distract them in the mornings by going to parks or doing moms group stuff, they are less likely to fuss. Then we come home and have lunch at noon and they go down at 12:30. They sleep anywhere from 2-3.5 hours. It is lovely :D
