I can't decide if I want to try to download my LJ or just let it disappear. I tried to download everything through Xjournal but for whatever reason it says my "older entries aren't formatted correctly" or something like that, so it won't do it. Grrr.

Almost 8 years. Do I bother trying to find a way to keep it? Should I find a PC to use LJarchive? Should I just let it blissfully drift away?

Decisions. Thoughts?

It's likely not going anywhere. But I did ljarchive mine - mostly because I have info in there that could potentially be needed in court since it was my only documentation at the time. I'd certainly miss my journal if I lost it but it wouldn't be the end of the world. More important to me are the pictures, which are still on my hard drive, CDs and Flickr. But I'd definitely miss my circle of friends.

But really, it's not going anywhere. Back it up if you want that all saved but I wouldn't fret about it going *poof*.

I don't really think LJ is going to crash and burn. I do think about archiving from time to time, not in an OMG kind of way but more of a do I want this for posterity way.

Can't decide.

Could you use ljarchive on Jen's computer and burn it to cd to bring to the mac?

Try this link: http://ecwoodburn.livejournal.com/856676.html

They mentioned a mac. But it didn't sound like they had one. I don't know the person, it's a friend of a friend of a friend kind of thing.

I was unsure what to do also but decided it was quick and easy so I did it.

ljarchive doesn't work for me either.

edit: while it didn't work on Vista - I tried it on XP and it's working. So if you want me to I can do it for you at work and put it on my external drive.

Why do you think the content of your journal would become inaccessible to you?

I don't think that will happen. I do know that LJ is having some financial problems (who isn't?) and since it's not something that is in any way vital to the universe, it could theoretically end at any time.

Do I want to have my files, or do I like the idea of them just going POOF? That is the question.

FWIW, I'm not backing this journal up. I had a different LJ a long time ago, and I made a pdf of it. One time I went back and looked at it, and it just made me incredibly sad. I don't even go back and read my own entries through the year. I dunno.

On the Xjournal community someone posted a question about that older entries thing and there's a link to the place to change it in the comments. Once I did that Xjournal worked great for me. I say download, if only for the Punk-related stuff!

blogbooker.com worked well for me, at least on a wordpress blog. (it has LJ option, too.) it just makes a not-so-pretty PDF, but it's there. and yeah, at least for the stuff you wrote about punk, i'd save it.

I don't really know about archiving. I've found things before but I can't remember what they are. I suck, sorry. I just go back and make all my entries private, would that work for you?

I've done this before, you can make a .PDF of you LJ, comments, the whole works.

Maybe i'm foolish or overly optimistic, but I just don't see it going away. It has too much infrastructure, and its got a significant amount of name recognition. I'd be very surprised if the end is truly nigh for LJ. Of course, having said that, a backup of anything is always a GOOD thing

I was thinking about this, too. I'm guessing I will just let it go, too. I can't imagine it will ever go anywhere. I also can't imagine ever going back through any of that old stuff... too painful, maybe... I don't know. I think of deleting and starting again all the time. I just don't know, either.

Go to this address, choose Western.

That will convert your older entries. I had to do the same for LjArchive.

I just used ljmigrate (on my Mac) and it worked great. I had to run it from a command prompt but with the tutorial it was 5-minute simple.
