What do you think about all of this swine flu business?

We've already got three probable cases in Dallas County.

I'm not particularly concerned about it affecting my household directly (the out-of-pocket cost for Relenza or Tamiflu is spendy!) but we do have N95 masks in our house if the risk of contracting it warrants using them. (We have N95 masks as a matter of habit; I have a friend with reduced immunity due to medication for a chronic illness.)

the school district i used to work in has been shut down for a week after 3 confirmed cases and 4 more suspected. we are also a major shopping destination for mexican nationals during holy week which just passed.

sooooo, i am mildly concerned, especially being pregnant. i'm glad yesterday was my last day in retail so can go into hermit mode. i'll also be more vigilant about noah washing his hands (which needs to happen anyway).

i have a dr appt on wednesday and will have a lot of questions for her.

I'm going to Animal Kingdom tomorrow. Wonder if I should be worried...

I don't really concern myself overly much with it. I guess after having been in China during a flu epidemic and Toronto during SARS...I don't freak out much about the Killer Disease of the Week.

I'd also point out that the areas that have large numbers of Mexican visitors are more likely to be hit. I think we're not at high risk, and if we are, there are alternate ways the swine flu can be treated that don't necessarily need antibiotics.

I'm not particularly concerned - in Mexico, the rate of death was 6% - same (or at least similar) rate to the "regular" flu in the US. And in the US, everyone's been fine so far.

I can't get into panic mode yet when I have so many immediate things to panic about.

On the larger scale, cautious optimism. The strain that's causing trouble is a new configuration of known nasties, and it's beatable. This is a kill-hundreds disease, not a kill-millions disease. It's not time to worry until there are bits we've never seen before and don't know what to do about them.

Closer to (metaphorical) home, my sister is pretty seriously immunocompromised these days, and I'm really concerned it's going to start showing up around Atlanta. I'd just as soon she not be one of the hundreds.

I'm considering stocking up on my locally raised grass-fed pork and bacon in case some idiot decides that curly-tailed livestock is too dangerous and must all be slaughtered and burned immediately. Unfortunately my freezer is small.

I'm just going to be a hand-washing fanatic (not that I'm not already) and make sure J. and L. wash hands lots, too, at day care and at school and at home. What else can we do really?

My Panamanian friend said in Spanish it's "Influenze Porcina" which sounds better, in some way. I have a bad immune system so it does concern me a bit, but I'm more concerned about mass hysteria and people mass panicking at the moment.

I think it's completely blown out of proportion. Period. 300 cases worldwide? We're freaking about that? Really?

I'm more concerned about the financial state of this nation than I am about the flu.
