I don't think the Montessori school is going to let us out of our contract for the school year. I am to write a formal letter asking to be released and then the Head of School will decide if she will "take it to committee" for a vote. Who knows how long that will take? It is already August 11th. I need to contact the other school to let them know if she is coming, but how can I do that when I don't know if they will let me out of the contract?

The Montessori school already has almost $6k of our money. We can't afford to just let them keep it. We can't afford to hire someone to watch Punk for those extra days. We can't afford the after-care program there. We just can't.

And they don't care. Because they don't have all of their slots filled.

I know you can afford it. Believe me, I undertand...but it seems that the least expensive choice is to hire somebody for 2 weeks to watch her. Then you get to keep your job, she still gets to go to the awesome school and you don't walk away from $6K. I know I couldn't walk away from it, myself!

I really hope that someone will offer to come and stay with you for a week...two people...they can both take a week...or could you let punk stay with a grandparent or something for that amount of time?

Wait, they want to keep the whole $6K? Not just the $1,000 deposit?

You should just walk away from the $1,000 deposit, if they won't give it back to you easily, since that was in the contract.

But don't they have to refund the tuition you've pre-paid?

There has got to be a way to make this work, without throwing good money after bad. Keep in mind the concept of sunk costs! Either way, you've spent that 6,000, unless you get it back, so does it make sense to keep paying or to bail?

Dang, that's a crap situation! Also, sorry, I meant to call you today to see if you wanted to hang out with the wee one, but the day blew up in a flurry of errands and housework. Next time!

They will not return the $1000. It is nonrefundable.
They will not return the $4800 we sent them in May, either. Head of school made that very clear on the phone today.

They MIGHT release us from our obligation to pay them the additional $4800 that is due on November 1st. I can petition with a letter, then wait for the finance committee of the board of trustees (or whatever) to meet and vote on it, then get a decision. Some time in the next 4 or so weeks.

So my options are:
1. Make it work there and risk pissing off my job some more.
2. Walk away, enroll her in another school, and HOPE they let us out of the $4800.

That sucks. I would think the fact that they don'e have all the spots filled would work in your favor; it's not like Punk was holding a spot that they could have sold to someone else, kwim?

I'm sure you've thought of this, but is there a family friend who stays at home with their kids who would be willing to watch her for the time being for an agreed upon fee or something small? I would do it for you if I were living in the valley if I were in the position with no qualms. There must be someone who may be able to help. Regardless, good luck.
